5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Members of St. Luke "Community" United Methodist |

6 | 6 | | Church in Dallas are celebrating the 90th anniversary of their |
---|
7 | 7 | | church's founding in 2023; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In 1933, the congregation was organized as St. Paul |
---|
9 | 9 | | Mission Church by ministers from St. Paul United Methodist Church |
---|
10 | 10 | | downtown, who recognized a need in East Dallas; the first small |
---|
11 | 11 | | structure built by members was destroyed by a fire in 1941, but four |
---|
12 | 12 | | years later, they completed a new red brick sanctuary on Wahoo |
---|
13 | 13 | | Street and Spring Avenue; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The congregation became St. Luke Methodist Church |
---|
15 | 15 | | in the late 1950s; it moved to its present-day campus in 1974, under |
---|
16 | 16 | | the leadership of longtime pastor Zan W. Holmes Jr., who also added |
---|
17 | 17 | | the word "Community" to its name; in 2017, St. Luke transferred its |
---|
18 | 18 | | old Wahoo Street property to the Zan Wesley Holmes Jr. Community |
---|
19 | 19 | | Outreach Center to support its good works; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Since July 2020, the church has been ably guided by |
---|
21 | 21 | | senior pastor Richie Butler; he worked tirelessly to maintain the |
---|
22 | 22 | | congregation's cohesion during the upheaval of the COVID-19 |
---|
23 | 23 | | pandemic and following major storm damage to the church in spring |
---|
24 | 24 | | 2021; while repairs were underway, Highland Park United Methodist |
---|
25 | 25 | | Church shared its facilities; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, St. Luke sponsors a variety of initiatives |
---|
27 | 27 | | benefiting the wider community, including donations of food and |
---|
28 | 28 | | clothing, eviction prevention, and emergency and temporary |
---|
29 | 29 | | shelter; it has partnered with Harvest Project to distribute fresh |
---|
30 | 30 | | fruits and vegetables and with Project Unity to offer COVID-19 |
---|
31 | 31 | | vaccinations and testing; moreover, it assists children of |
---|
32 | 32 | | incarcerated parents and youth in foster care; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, For nine decades, St. Luke has provided area |
---|
34 | 34 | | residents with opportunities for spiritual growth, fellowship, and |
---|
35 | 35 | | community outreach, and its continued existence is a tribute to the |
---|
36 | 36 | | unwavering commitment of its members, both past and present; now, |
---|
37 | 37 | | therefore, be it |

38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby congratulate St. Luke "Community" United |
---|
40 | 40 | | Methodist Church on its 90th anniversary and extend to its members |

41 | 41 | | sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
