| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, People across the State of Texas are observing the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | 73rd annual National Day of Prayer on May 2, 2024; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The United States has a long-standing tradition of |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | public prayer dating back to the earliest days of its founding; in |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | 1775, the Second Continental Congress issued a proclamation calling |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | for a day of prayer for the fledgling nation, and during the ensuing |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | decades and centuries, special days of prayer were issued by state |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and federal elected leaders; President Abraham Lincoln famously |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | proclaimed a national day of prayer and fasting in the midst of the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | calamitous Civil War, calling upon citizens of the war-torn states |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | to humble themselves before the Almighty; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The National Day of Prayer was made an annual event |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | when President Harry Truman signed a joint resolution by Congress |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | in 1952; the permanent date was set in 1988 when President Ronald |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Reagan signed the public law designating the first Thursday in May |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | for the observance; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the history of our nation, in times of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | crisis and of calm, Americans have turned to prayer for strength, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | guidance, and inspiration, and the National Day of Prayer provides |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | an opportunity for citizens from all walks of life to join together |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | on a special occasion of fellowship, unity, and hope for our common |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | future; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 2, 2024, as National Day of Prayer |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | in Texas; and, be it further |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That all Texans be encouraged to set aside a |

| 31 | 31 | | particular moment on this day to give thanks for our manifold |
|---|
