5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of San Benito lost a distinguished |
---|
6 | 6 | | public servant and a beloved member of the community with the |
---|
7 | 7 | | passing of former Cameron County sheriff Omar Lucio on January 17, |
---|
8 | 8 | | 2022, at the age of 88; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Omar Lucio was born in San Benito on August 19, 1933, |
---|
10 | 10 | | to Armando and Porfiria Lucio; he learned the importance of hard |
---|
11 | 11 | | work, integrity, and service at an early age, and his belief in the |
---|
12 | 12 | | value of education led him to study sociology and criminal justice |
---|
13 | 13 | | at Pan American University and later to obtain a juris doctor degree |
---|
14 | 14 | | from the Reynaldo Garza Law School; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Lucio's exemplary career in law enforcement |
---|
16 | 16 | | spanned over six decades; he was hired by the Harlingen Police |
---|
17 | 17 | | Department in 1962 and rose through the ranks to become captain of |
---|
18 | 18 | | police; he went on to serve as sheriff of Cameron County, a role in |
---|
19 | 19 | | which he benefited the community he loved by utilizing his skills, |
---|
20 | 20 | | knowledge, and tireless commitment to maintaining law and order; |
---|
21 | 21 | | along the way, he furthered his professional development by |
---|
22 | 22 | | graduating from the FBI National Academy, and he was a member of the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Sheriffs' Association of Texas and the National Sheriffs' |
---|
24 | 24 | | Association; widely respected in his field, he strove to share his |
---|
25 | 25 | | wisdom and experience with his colleagues as well as aspiring peace |
---|
26 | 26 | | officers; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Sheriff Lucio's contributions extended far beyond |
---|
28 | 28 | | his law enforcement duties; his commitment to community service was |
---|
29 | 29 | | evident through his involvement in such organizations as Leadership |
---|
30 | 30 | | Harlingen, the Harlingen Leadership Steering Committee, the United |
---|
31 | 31 | | Way, and the Knights of Columbus, as well as through his work as a |
---|
32 | 32 | | board member for End of Road Ministry Shelter for the Homeless; he |
---|
33 | 33 | | was recognized for his efforts in behalf of youth baseball with the |
---|
34 | 34 | | dedication of Omar Lucio Field at Victor Park, and the Cameron |
---|
35 | 35 | | County Commissioners Court recently made the unanimous decision to |
---|
36 | 36 | | name the sheriff's department administration building in his honor; |
---|
37 | 37 | | and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Sheriff Lucio was a devoted husband to his wife of 70 |
---|
39 | 39 | | years, Nena Lucio, with whom he shared in the joy of raising five |
---|
40 | 40 | | children, Gracie, Patricia, Edna, Omar, and Sarah; he was further |
---|
41 | 41 | | blessed with 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a |
---|
42 | 42 | | great-great-grandchild; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Omar Lucio was an esteemed law enforcement |
---|
44 | 44 | | professional, a loving family man, and a pillar of his community, |
---|
45 | 45 | | and those he left behind will forever find inspiration in their |
---|
46 | 46 | | memories of his remarkable life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
48 | 48 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Omar Lucio and |
---|
49 | 49 | | extend heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends, and former |
---|
50 | 50 | | colleagues; and, be it further |
---|
51 | 51 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
52 | 52 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
53 | 53 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Omar Lucio. |
