44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to
66 a close with the passing of Cruz Reyes Hinojosa Sr. of Houston on
77 February 4, 2023, at the age of 89; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Luis and Cipriana Hinojosa, Cruz Hinojosa
99 was born on May 3, 1933, in Lawton, Oklahoma, and he grew up in the
1010 Second Ward of Houston with his five siblings, Jim, Louis, Ray,
1111 Minnie, and Viola; he attended Sam Houston High School, where he was
1212 quarterback of the football team; and
1313 WHEREAS, On March 2, 1952, Mr. Hinojosa married the love of
1414 his life, Susie, and they were blessed with nine children, Cruz,
1515 Joe, Sylvia, Damian, Susie, Thomas, John, Sarah, and Michael; with
1616 the passing years, he had the pleasure of seeing his family grow to
1717 include 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and
1818 WHEREAS, Mr. Hinojosa valiantly served his country as a
1919 member of the U.S. Air Force; during his 21 years in uniform, he was
2020 stationed in locations around the globe, including Alaska, Germany,
2121 and Thailand; following his retirement, he returned to Houston and
2222 became a purchasing agent for Texas Southern University; and
2323 WHEREAS, A leader in inner-city Houston, Mr. Hinojosa took an
2424 active role in politics and served as a community development
2525 commissioner and precinct judge; he was instrumental in the
2626 renovation of Eastwood Park and the development of the Flores
2727 Neighborhood Library, and he spent years coaching baseball,
2828 softball, and basketball; he was also active in such organizations
2929 as the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Knights of Columbus
3030 Council No. 7230; in his leisure time, he enjoyed singing and
3131 dancing, and he played a variety of sports throughout his life; and
3232 WHEREAS, Deeply dedicated to his family, his faith, and his
3333 community, Cruz Hinojosa earned the lasting respect and admiration
3434 of all who were privileged to know him, and he will be fondly
3535 remembered and deeply missed; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3737 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Cruz Reyes Hinojosa
3838 Sr. and extend sincere condolences to his relatives and friends;
3939 and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4141 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4242 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Cruz
4343 Hinojosa.
