5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |

6 | 6 | | a close with the passing of Cruz Reyes Hinojosa Sr. of Houston on |
---|
7 | 7 | | February 4, 2023, at the age of 89; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Luis and Cipriana Hinojosa, Cruz Hinojosa |
---|
9 | 9 | | was born on May 3, 1933, in Lawton, Oklahoma, and he grew up in the |
---|
10 | 10 | | Second Ward of Houston with his five siblings, Jim, Louis, Ray, |
---|
11 | 11 | | Minnie, and Viola; he attended Sam Houston High School, where he was |
---|
12 | 12 | | quarterback of the football team; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, On March 2, 1952, Mr. Hinojosa married the love of |
---|
14 | 14 | | his life, Susie, and they were blessed with nine children, Cruz, |
---|
15 | 15 | | Joe, Sylvia, Damian, Susie, Thomas, John, Sarah, and Michael; with |
---|
16 | 16 | | the passing years, he had the pleasure of seeing his family grow to |
---|
17 | 17 | | include 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Hinojosa valiantly served his country as a |
---|
19 | 19 | | member of the U.S. Air Force; during his 21 years in uniform, he was |
---|
20 | 20 | | stationed in locations around the globe, including Alaska, Germany, |
---|
21 | 21 | | and Thailand; following his retirement, he returned to Houston and |
---|
22 | 22 | | became a purchasing agent for Texas Southern University; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, A leader in inner-city Houston, Mr. Hinojosa took an |
---|
24 | 24 | | active role in politics and served as a community development |
---|
25 | 25 | | commissioner and precinct judge; he was instrumental in the |
---|
26 | 26 | | renovation of Eastwood Park and the development of the Flores |
---|
27 | 27 | | Neighborhood Library, and he spent years coaching baseball, |
---|
28 | 28 | | softball, and basketball; he was also active in such organizations |
---|
29 | 29 | | as the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Knights of Columbus |
---|
30 | 30 | | Council No. 7230; in his leisure time, he enjoyed singing and |
---|
31 | 31 | | dancing, and he played a variety of sports throughout his life; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Deeply dedicated to his family, his faith, and his |
---|
33 | 33 | | community, Cruz Hinojosa earned the lasting respect and admiration |
---|
34 | 34 | | of all who were privileged to know him, and he will be fondly |
---|
35 | 35 | | remembered and deeply missed; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Cruz Reyes Hinojosa |
---|
38 | 38 | | Sr. and extend sincere condolences to his relatives and friends; |
---|
39 | 39 | | and, be it further |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

41 | 41 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
