| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Santos Mijares Jr. of Eagle Pass, an esteemed |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | community leader and a friend to many, passed away on September 4, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | 2022, at the age of 63; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Santos and Florinda Mijares, Santos |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Mijares was born in Eagle Pass on February 8, 1959; at the age of 12, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | he became a migrant worker, joining his parents in farm fields to |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | help provide for his family and his younger siblings; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Mijares sold insurance for a time before going |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | on to open immigration services and tax preparation businesses; he |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | also became a real estate investor; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The trajectory of Mr. Mijares' life significantly |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | changed in 1999 with the deepening of his faith; dedicated to giving |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | back to his community, he started a weekly Bible study for local |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | businessmen, provided financial counsel and support to local and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | out-of-town ministries, and used his construction expertise to help |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | churches with their building projects; moreover, he took trips to |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, where he shared the Gospel and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | ministered to people; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, On September 3, 2017, Mr. Mijares was inspired to |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | establish and pastor a local church that he named Nueva Creación |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Eagle Pass; the church would come to have a strong Christian |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | influence in the city and serve as a welcoming place where families |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | could gather and worship; realizing his dream to expand the church |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | to accommodate a larger congregation, he used his construction |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | knowledge to create plans for a church building with an accessible |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | location; on September 3, 2021, Nueva Creación Eagle Pass hosted |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | the inaugural raising of the Christian flag at Eagle Pass City Hall; |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | in a span of five years, the church ministry hosted a series of |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | local events that brought awareness to such issues as bullying and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | suicide while inspiring attendees to embark on their own personal |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | journeys of faith; during his time as a Christian pastor, |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Mr. Mijares also served State Representative Heriberto "Eddie" |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Morales Jr., whom he helped draft his first prayer for the House |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | floor; and |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Mijares enjoyed the love |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | and support of his wife of four decades, Sylvia, and his three |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | children, Joshua, Krystal, and Nathan; and |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Santos Mijares possessed a generosity of spirit that |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | expressed itself in myriad ways, and he leaves behind a legacy of |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | good works that will continue to inspire the residents of Eagle Pass |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | and beyond for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 47 | 47 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Santos Mijares Jr. and |
|---|
| 48 | 48 | | extend heartfelt condolences to the members of his family: to his |
|---|
| 49 | 49 | | wife, Sylvia Mijares; to his children, Joshua Mijares, Krystal Y. |
|---|
| 50 | 50 | | Mijares, and Nathan Mijares; to his parents, Santos and Florinda |
|---|
| 51 | 51 | | Mijares; to his nine siblings; and to all others who mourn his |
|---|
| 52 | 52 | | passing; and, be it further |
|---|
| 53 | 53 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 54 | 54 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|---|
| 55 | 55 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Santos |
