5	5	WHEREAS, The Del Rio High School boys' track and field team
6	6	achieved great distinction by winning the 91st annual Border
7	7	Olympics, held March 3 and 4, 2023, in Laredo; and
8	8	WHEREAS, The Border Olympics traces its origins to 1932, when
9	9	it started as a track meet then known as the International Frontier
10	10	Olympics; over the years, this celebrated event has grown to
11	11	encompass collegiate golf and tennis tournaments as well as high
12	12	school baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, and cross country
13	13	competitions in addition the track and field contests; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Facing off against athletes from 20 schools in South
15	15	Texas, the Rams tallied a final score of 84 en route to collecting
16	16	their second-straight team championship, besting their nearest
17	17	opponent by 21 points; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Del Rio was especially impressive in the relay
19	19	events; the foursome of Juan Peralta, Emmanuel Devonte Reyes, Zane
20	20	Hughes, and Jovahn West clocked a time of 43.08 seconds in the
21	21	400-meter relay to take home the gold; in the 800-meter relay,
22	22	Mr. Peralta, Ethan Vasquez, Mr. Hughes, and Mr. West won the gold
23	23	and set a meet record with a time of 1 minute, 30.23 seconds;
24	24	moreover, the quartet of Alex Rodriguez, Rolando Rios, Jose Ortiz,
25	25	and Elian De La Paz finished in fifth place in the 1,600-meter
26	26	relay; and
27	27	WHEREAS, In the individual events, Mr. Hughes secured the
28	28	silver medal in the 200-meter dash and was named a top-10 athlete in
29	29	the boys' division; Mr. West also received that honor for his
30	30	performance, which included finishing fifth in the 100-meter dash
31	31	and soaring 21 feet, 10 inches, in the long jump to claim the bronze
32	32	medal; Alan Dobbins placed third in both the high jump, with a leap
33	33	that cleared 6 feet, and in the triple jump, with a distance of 41
34	34	feet, 10.5 inches; fourth-place finishes were garnered by Mr. De La
35	35	Paz in the 400-meter dash, Isaac Jimenez in the shot put, and Manuel
36	36	Padilla in the discus; and
37	37	WHEREAS, The Rams were also represented at the meet by Aaron
38	38	Acosta, Cristian Briones, Jose A. Martinez, Steven McBlain, Perry
39	39	Mcintire, Jonathan Mendoza, Jose Ramirez, Juan Ramos, Andres
40	40	Rivera, Jayden Rivera, Hugo Rosales, Ricardo J. Torres, and Andrew
41	41	Villarreal; these dedicated student-athletes were ably guided by
42	42	head coach Ricardo Torres and assistant coaches Luis Esparza, Ariel
43	43	Falcon, Ramiro Frausto, David Ruiz, and Chris Wren; and
44	44	WHEREAS, The Del Rio Rams have excelled through skill, hard
45	45	work, and an enduring commitment to excellence, and they may
46	46	reflect with pride on a job well done; now, therefore, be it
47	47	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
48	48	Legislature hereby congratulate the Del Rio High School boys' track
49	49	and field team on winning the 2023 Border Olympics and extend to the
50	50	athletes, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued
51	51	success; and, be it further
52	52	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
53	53	prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
54	54	House of Representatives.
