55 WHEREAS, The city of Georgetown is celebrating the 175th
66 anniversary of its founding in 2023, and this occasion provides a
77 fitting opportunity to reflect on the history of this vibrant
88 Central Texas city; and
99 WHEREAS, Established in 1848 as the county seat of Williamson
1010 County, the city was named after George Washington Glasscock, who
1111 donated land for the site, along with his partner, Thomas B. Huling;
1212 the community grew in importance with the establishment of
1313 Southwestern University in 1873 and the completion of a rail line to
1414 the town five years later, and the early economy centered around
1515 agriculture and cattle, with a cotton boom starting in the 1880s;
1616 and
1717 WHEREAS, Currently one of the fastest-growing cities in the
1818 country, Georgetown is home to more than 86,000 residents; despite
1919 its rapid expansion, the city has retained its historic charm,
2020 carefully preserving the Classical Revival and Late Victorian
2121 architecture of the Williamson County Courthouse Historic
2222 District; the city also features a wide range of popular
2323 attractions, including the Georgetown Palace Theatre, the
2424 Williamson Museum, Inner Space Cavern, and Blue Hole Park; and
2525 WHEREAS, The citizens of Georgetown are working to safeguard
2626 the best of their past while building a future of expanding
2727 opportunity, and it is a pleasure to honor their contributions to
2828 the story of the Lone Star State on the occasion of this notable
2929 milestone; now, therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3131 Legislature hereby commemorate the 175th anniversary of the
3232 founding of Georgetown and extend to its residents sincere best
3333 wishes for the future.
