No. 2531 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Proud residents of Williamson County are celebrating the 175th anniversary of their county's founding in 2023; and WHEREAS, Located just north of Austin, Williamson County occupies more than 1,100 square miles and is divided by the Balcones Escarpment, which runs from Jarrell in the north to Round Rock in the south; the area was inhabited by Tonkawa, Lipan Apache, Comanche, and other tribes prior to the arrival of Anglo settlers during the Texas Revolution and the early days of the Republic of Texas; on March 13, 1848, the state legislature established the county, naming it after prominent judge and soldier Robert M. Williamson; and WHEREAS, During the 19th century, the county's rich blackland soils provided fertile farmland for wheat and corn, and its agriculture-based economy was further bolstered by cattle and sheep ranching and, later, by the expansion of cotton farming; the diversification of agriculture in the region was followed by significant social and economic changes in the mid-to-late 20th century, and the county's proximity to Austin led to dramatic population growth in Round Rock, Cedar Park, and the county seat of Georgetown; and WHEREAS, Today, nearly 650,000 people call Williamson County home; the area offers many recreational opportunities for hunting, fishing, and boating, as well as such attractions as Inner Space Cavern, the Georgetown Palace Theatre, the Dan Moody Museum in Taylor, the Round Rock Express Minor League Baseball team, and the annual Pioneer Day at Old Settlers Park, which are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike; and WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work together to build an even brighter future, the people of Williamson County may take great pride in the important role their communities continue to play in the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 175th anniversary of the founding of Williamson County and extend to its citizens sincere best wishes for the future.
