44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Williamson County are
66 celebrating the 175th anniversary of their county's founding in
77 2023; and
88 WHEREAS, Located just north of Austin, Williamson County
99 occupies more than 1,100 square miles and is divided by the Balcones
1010 Escarpment, which runs from Jarrell in the north to Round Rock in
1111 the south; the area was inhabited by Tonkawa, Lipan Apache,
1212 Comanche, and other tribes prior to the arrival of Anglo settlers
1313 during the Texas Revolution and the early days of the Republic of
1414 Texas; on March 13, 1848, the state legislature established the
1515 county, naming it after prominent judge and soldier Robert M.
1616 Williamson; and
1717 WHEREAS, During the 19th century, the county's rich blackland
1818 soils provided fertile farmland for wheat and corn, and its
1919 agriculture-based economy was further bolstered by cattle and sheep
2020 ranching and, later, by the expansion of cotton farming; the
2121 diversification of agriculture in the region was followed by
2222 significant social and economic changes in the mid-to-late 20th
2323 century, and the county's proximity to Austin led to dramatic
2424 population growth in Round Rock, Cedar Park, and the county seat of
2525 Georgetown; and
2626 WHEREAS, Today, nearly 650,000 people call Williamson County
2727 home; the area offers many recreational opportunities for hunting,
2828 fishing, and boating, as well as such attractions as Inner Space
2929 Cavern, the Georgetown Palace Theatre, the Dan Moody Museum in
3030 Taylor, the Round Rock Express Minor League Baseball team, and the
3131 annual Pioneer Day at Old Settlers Park, which are enjoyed by
3232 residents and visitors alike; and
3333 WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work together
3434 to build an even brighter future, the people of Williamson County
3535 may take great pride in the important role their communities
3636 continue to play in the story of the Lone Star State; now,
3737 therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3939 Legislature hereby commemorate the 175th anniversary of the
4040 founding of Williamson County and extend to its citizens sincere
4141 best wishes for the future.
