| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Carlos Guzman is retiring as superintendent of the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Roma Independent School District on June 30, 2022, drawing to a |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | close more than three and a half decades of distinguished service to |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | the district; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of Roma and a 1983 graduate of Roma High |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | School, Mr. Guzman earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | The University of Texas-Pan American; he joined the faculty of Roma |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Junior High School as an English teacher in 1986, and he was |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | appointed as the school's assistant principal seven years later; in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | 1997, he became principal of Roma Middle School, and in 2005 he was |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | appointed as the district's director of student improvement; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 2014, this gifted educator was selected from |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | among 16 candidates as the district's superintendent; during his |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | exemplary eight-year tenure, Roma ISD has been widely recognized |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | for its exceptional academic performance; the district was named |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | the 2019 H-E-B Excellence in Education Small School District of the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Year and was selected multiple times as a Texas Honor Roll District; |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | moreover, two of its campuses have received the Blue Ribbon School |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | award from the U.S. Department of Education; another highlight came |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | in 2021, when Roma's Mariachi Nuevo Santander ensemble took part in |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the inauguration celebration of President Joseph R. Biden Jr.; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his other responsibilities, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Mr. Guzman was appointed to the Texas Education Agency Rural |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Schools Task Force in 2016, and he has also served as chair of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | University Interscholastic League Region 15 and UIL Area G; in |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | 2019, he was named the Region 1 Superintendent of the Year by the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Texas Association of School Boards; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Carlos Guzman's commitment to excellence, |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | willingness to innovate, and passion for motivating students have |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | made a lasting impact on generations of Roma students, and he may |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | indeed reflect with pride on his outstanding record of service; |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Carlos Guzman on his retirement |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | from the Roma Independent School District and extend to him sincere |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further |
