5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A life dedicated to public service has drawn to a |

6 | 6 | | close with the death of former Jim Hogg County Sheriff Gilberto |
---|
7 | 7 | | Saldaña Ybañez on August 27, 2022, at the age of 85; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Hebbronville, Gilberto |
---|
9 | 9 | | Ybañez was born to Esperanza and Jesus Ybañez on June 4, 1937, and |
---|
10 | 10 | | he grew up with four siblings, Jesus, Baldemar, Palmira, and Juan; |
---|
11 | 11 | | he was a member of the Hebbronville High School football team, and |
---|
12 | 12 | | he went on to serve his nation in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Ybañez was certified as a peace officer at |
---|
14 | 14 | | Laredo Junior College in 1972, and in 1980, he was elected sheriff |
---|
15 | 15 | | of Jim Hogg County; affectionately known as "El Sherife," he held |
---|
16 | 16 | | the position for 20 years, serving his community with dedication |
---|
17 | 17 | | and integrity; a leader in his profession, he was elected in 1995 as |
---|
18 | 18 | | the first Hispanic president of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas, |
---|
19 | 19 | | and from 1985 to 1986, he also served as president of the Coastal |
---|
20 | 20 | | Bend Peace Officers Association; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Sheriff Ybañez further contributed to his community |
---|
22 | 22 | | as a longtime supporter of the programs and activities of the Jim |
---|
23 | 23 | | Hogg County Independent School District, particularly the D.A.R.E. |
---|
24 | 24 | | and P.A.L. initiatives; moreover, he was a former president of the |
---|
25 | 25 | | Lions Club and a member of the American Legion; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, A devoted father and grandfather, a dedicated public |
---|
27 | 27 | | servant, and a proud son of Hebbronville, Gilberto Ybañez lived a |
---|
28 | 28 | | rich and purposeful life, and he leaves behind a record of service |
---|
29 | 29 | | that his loved ones can remember with pride; now, therefore, be it |
---|
30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Gilberto Saldaña |
---|
32 | 32 | | Ybañez and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: |

33 | 33 | | to his sons, Ricardo G. Ybañez and his wife, Estela, and Roberto |

34 | 34 | | F. Ybañez; to his granddaughters, Alicia A. Ybañez and Dominique |

35 | 35 | | D. Ybañez; to the mother of his children, Alicia L. Garcia, and her |
