5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas Killian of Rice University has been named |

6 | 6 | | a 2023 fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of |

7 | 7 | | Science; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, AAAS is the world's largest general scientific |
---|
9 | 9 | | society and the publisher of the respected journal Science, and |
---|
10 | 10 | | each year since 1874, the organization has recognized exceptional |
---|
11 | 11 | | scientists, engineers, and innovators through its fellowship |
---|
12 | 12 | | program; among the highest honors in the scientific community, the |
---|
13 | 13 | | AAAS fellowship is awarded to less than one percent of the |
---|
14 | 14 | | organization's members; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The dean of the Wiess School of Natural Sciences and |
---|
16 | 16 | | a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University, Dr. Thomas |
---|
17 | 17 | | Killian studies ultracold atoms and plasmas, and the exploration |
---|
18 | 18 | | lays the foundation for emerging technological advances in |
---|
19 | 19 | | timekeeping, navigation, and quantum computing and allows for such |
---|
20 | 20 | | precise control of atoms that their motion can be used as tools for |
---|
21 | 21 | | modeling of inaccessible systems such as the cores of stars; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Since joining Rice University, Dr. Killian has held |
---|
23 | 23 | | many leadership roles, including deputy speaker of the Faculty |
---|
24 | 24 | | Senate and chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and he |
---|
25 | 25 | | is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a recipient of the |
---|
26 | 26 | | David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship for Science and |
---|
27 | 27 | | Engineering and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship; |
---|
28 | 28 | | in addition to his academic work, he cofounded the company |
---|
29 | 29 | | ChemoSen3D to commercialize bio-printing and three-dimensional |
---|
30 | 30 | | cell-culturing technology for research and pharmaceutical |
---|
31 | 31 | | applications; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Killian holds an undergraduate degree in |
---|
33 | 33 | | physics from Harvard University, a master's degree in physical |
---|
34 | 34 | | chemistry from Cambridge University, and a doctorate in atomic |
---|
35 | 35 | | physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; he |
---|
36 | 36 | | completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of |
---|
37 | 37 | | Standards and Technology; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Killian has distinguished himself as a |
---|
39 | 39 | | leading authority in his field, and his election as an AAAS Fellow |
---|
40 | 40 | | represents an impressive milestone in his career and a fitting |
---|
41 | 41 | | tribute to his invaluable contributions to the body of scientific |
---|
42 | 42 | | knowledge; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Thomas Killian on being named a |
---|
45 | 45 | | 2023 fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of |

46 | 46 | | Science and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success |
