55 WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas Killian of Rice University has been named
66 a 2023 fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of
77 Science; and
88 WHEREAS, AAAS is the world's largest general scientific
99 society and the publisher of the respected journal Science, and
1010 each year since 1874, the organization has recognized exceptional
1111 scientists, engineers, and innovators through its fellowship
1212 program; among the highest honors in the scientific community, the
1313 AAAS fellowship is awarded to less than one percent of the
1414 organization's members; and
1515 WHEREAS, The dean of the Wiess School of Natural Sciences and
1616 a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University, Dr. Thomas
1717 Killian studies ultracold atoms and plasmas, and the exploration
1818 lays the foundation for emerging technological advances in
1919 timekeeping, navigation, and quantum computing and allows for such
2020 precise control of atoms that their motion can be used as tools for
2121 modeling of inaccessible systems such as the cores of stars; and
2222 WHEREAS, Since joining Rice University, Dr. Killian has held
2323 many leadership roles, including deputy speaker of the Faculty
2424 Senate and chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and he
2525 is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a recipient of the
2626 David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship for Science and
2727 Engineering and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship;
2828 in addition to his academic work, he cofounded the company
2929 ChemoSen3D to commercialize bio-printing and three-dimensional
3030 cell-culturing technology for research and pharmaceutical
3131 applications; and
3232 WHEREAS, Dr. Killian holds an undergraduate degree in
3333 physics from Harvard University, a master's degree in physical
3434 chemistry from Cambridge University, and a doctorate in atomic
3535 physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; he
3636 completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of
3737 Standards and Technology; and
3838 WHEREAS, Thomas Killian has distinguished himself as a
3939 leading authority in his field, and his election as an AAAS Fellow
4040 represents an impressive milestone in his career and a fitting
4141 tribute to his invaluable contributions to the body of scientific
4242 knowledge; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4444 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Thomas Killian on being named a
4545 2023 fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of
4646 Science and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success
4747 in his important work; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4949 prepared for Dr. Killian as an expression of high regard by the
5050 Texas House of Representatives.
