| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Distinguished citizens of Palmhurst are gathering |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | in Austin on February 22, 2023, to celebrate Palmhurst Day at the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Development in the region began in 1912, when John |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | H. Shary invested in property and irrigation to expand early |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | experimental citrus groves into a commercial venture; remembered as |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | the "Father of the Texas Citrus Industry," he built what is now |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | known as the Shary Shivers Estate, a historic home where President |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Dwight D. Eisenhower visited and the 37th governor of Texas, Allan |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Shivers, married Marialice Shary; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Officially incorporated on January 25, 1964, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Palmhurst is governed by a mayor and five city council members and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | is today home to some 2,600 people; this business-friendly town |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | boasts a host of retail shops, and the region's climate is favorable |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | to tourism as well as agriculture; visitors can observe numerous |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | beautiful species of local and migratory birds in the area, and they |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | are drawn to such attractions as the Hidalgo Pumphouse, which |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | houses machinery that was used for development a century ago; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The city of Palmhurst was served for more than two |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | decades by Mayor Ramiro Jose Rodriguez Jr., who passed away on April |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | 5, 2022, at the age of 68; after taking office in 1999, he guided the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | city through a period of considerable growth, and his many |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | achievements included establishing the city's first police |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | department and municipal court and attracting businesses such as |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Walmart, H-E-B, and Walgreens that have provided employment |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | opportunities and enhanced the quality of life enjoyed by area |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | residents; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The residents of Palmhurst were fortunate to benefit |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | from Mayor Rodriguez's leadership and dedication, and they may |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | reflect with gratitude on the knowledge that his contributions will |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | benefit their outstanding community for years to come; now, |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 22, 2023, as Palmhurst Day at |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | the State Capitol and pay special tribute to the life and legacy of |
