| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, March 7, 2023, is University of Houston-Victoria Day |

| 6 | 6 | | at the State Capitol, and the occasion provides a fitting |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | opportunity to recognize those associated with this notable |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | institution; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1973, the University of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Houston-Victoria boasts more than 22,000 alumni, including |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | acclaimed author and artist Van G. Garrett, and it is meeting higher |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | education needs in a city that is home to over 65,000 people and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | that serves as a regional hub for the seven-county area known as the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Golden Crescent; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, UHV educates approximately 4,000 students annually |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | with about 1,000 graduates each year; the university offers more |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | than 80 bachelor's and master's degree programs with concentrations |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | in the fields of business, education and health professions, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | liberal arts and social sciences, and natural and applied science; |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | it was the first public university in Texas to offer an accelerated |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | bachelor's degree program, and it offers some of the lowest tuition |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | and fees in the state; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The only accredited four-year university in the city |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | of Victoria, UHV is also home to a number of formidable athletic |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | teams competing in baseball, softball, and men's and women's golf |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | and soccer in the National Association of Intercollegiate |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Athletics' Red River Conference; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Under the leadership of President Robert K. Glenn, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | UHV has continued to grow as a diverse institution, with the student |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | body currently representing 25 states across the country and 28 |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | countries worldwide; moreover, the school has been recognized as a |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Hispanic Serving Institution and a Military Friendly campus; and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its 50-year history, the University of |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Houston-Victoria has provided its students with outstanding |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | educational opportunities that offer flexibility, promote the |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | financial well-being of the student, and advance the quality of |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | life in the community through excellence in teaching, research, and |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | service, and in so doing, it has played an important role in the |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | growth and vitality of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |

| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 7, 2023, as University of |

| 42 | 42 | | Houston-Victoria Day at the State Capitol and extend to the |

| 43 | 43 | | visiting delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and |
