5	5	WHEREAS, Proud residents of Washington County are gathering
6	6	in Austin on February 27, 2023, to celebrate the unique role their
7	7	county has played in the history and ongoing development of the Lone
8	8	Star State; and
9	9	WHEREAS, In 1821, settlers recruited by Stephen F. Austin
10	10	began to homestead this region of rolling hills just west of the
11	11	Brazos River; during the Texas Revolution, the ferry crossing known
12	12	as Washington-on-the-Brazos became the headquarters of General Sam
13	13	Houston and the site of the Convention of 1836, which declared the
14	14	independence of Texas; the town was the capital of the new republic
15	15	from 1842 to 1845; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Washington County was organized in 1837, and Brenham
17	17	became the county seat in 1844; the county's prospects were
18	18	improved by the thousands of immigrants from Germany and Poland who
19	19	arrived during the 1860s and 1870s, and its economy was further
20	20	spurred by the arrival of the railroad in 1880; in those years,
21	21	cotton, corn, and poultry were the region's mainstays; and
22	22	WHEREAS, The area played an important role in the history of
23	23	higher education in Texas; Baylor University was founded in the
24	24	county in 1846, and in 1855 Soule University was founded in Chappell
25	25	Hill; today, Blinn College in Brenham carries on the proud
26	26	tradition; and
27	27	WHEREAS, Washington County's central role in the history of
28	28	Texas draws visitors from across the state and nation; the Star of
29	29	the Republic Museum, Independence Hall, and the Barrington Living
30	30	History Farm at the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site
31	31	vividly evoke the years of the Texas Republic; the Chappell Hill
32	32	Historic District includes a historical museum and a Masonic
33	33	cemetery with descendants of William B. Travis and is the site of
34	34	the "Official Bluebonnet Festival of Texas," which is held each
35	35	year in April; and
36	36	WHEREAS, Other popular attractions include the recreation
37	37	opportunities of Lake Somerville, local wineries, dozens of bed and
38	38	breakfast lodging properties, the Antique Rose Emporium, the
39	39	county's scenic country roads where wildflowers bloom in profusion,
40	40	Unity Theatre, and the Barnhill Center; the county also benefits
41	41	economically from the presence of Blue Bell Creameries, where one
42	42	of the nation's best-selling brands of ice cream is made, as well as
43	43	major production and global distribution facilities for BRIANNAS
44	44	Fine Salad Dressings and its parent corporation, Del Sol Food
45	45	Company; and
46	46	WHEREAS, Honoring their rich history as they continue to
47	47	build an even brighter future, the residents of Washington County
48	48	have many reasons to be proud of the place they call home; now,
49	49	therefore, be it
50	50	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
51	51	Legislature hereby recognize February 27, 2023, as Washington
52	52	County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the
53	53	visiting delegation.
