| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas are |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | gathering in Austin on February 22, 2023, to participate in |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Sheriffs' Association of Texas Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The office of sheriff is one of the oldest in the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | history of law enforcement; the Texas Constitution created the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | office in each county of the state, and legislation requires that a |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | sheriff conserve peace and enforce the criminal laws of the state; |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | moreover, the sheriff is responsible for the county jail, bail |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | bonds, civil process, and the security of the courts, and in some |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | smaller counties, the sheriff may also act as the tax collector; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The first meeting of the Sheriffs' Association of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Texas took place on August 14, 1874, making this group one of the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | oldest law enforcement organizations in the nation; association |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | members adopted their preamble calling for sheriffs to assist one |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | another in the execution of laws, in the discharge of their duties |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | against criminals, and in the protection of the citizens in their |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | respective counties and throughout the state; the group has |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | continued to follow the dictates of this mission to this day; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Sheriffs in our state's 254 counties are elected to |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | four-year terms, and each sheriff is a member of the Sheriffs' |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Association of Texas; in addition, associate membership in the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | organization is open to citizens who share an interest in assisting |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | law enforcement officials and supporting crime prevention and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | policing efforts; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The men and women of the Sheriffs' Association of |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Texas are helping to make the Lone Star State an even safer place, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and their work benefits countless people each day; now, therefore, |
|---|

| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 22, 2023, as Sheriffs' |
