5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Mission are gathering in Austin on |

6 | 6 | | March 29, 2023, to celebrate Mission Day at the State Capitol; and |

7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The city of Mission was founded in 1908, the year the |
---|
8 | 8 | | Missouri Pacific Railroad established a station in the area, and |
---|
9 | 9 | | the city was named for La Lomita Mission, which was located nearby; |
---|
10 | 10 | | since then, Mission, home of the grapefruit, has grown to be a |
---|
11 | 11 | | thriving city with a population of more than 86,000 people; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The first citrus trees in the Rio Grande Valley were |
---|
13 | 13 | | planted in the Mission area; today, the citrus industry is a |
---|
14 | 14 | | multimillion-dollar business and is celebrated each year at the |
---|
15 | 15 | | Texas Citrus Fiesta; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mission is a center for international trade and |
---|
17 | 17 | | entrepreneurship, and its Anzalduas International Bridge provides |
---|
18 | 18 | | a vital trade and tourism connection to Mexico; several |
---|
19 | 19 | | international manufacturers and other dynamic firms call Mission |
---|
20 | 20 | | home, including Stanley Black & Decker, Royal Technologies, |
---|
21 | 21 | | Wonderful Citrus, Killam Development, and the Texas International |
---|
22 | 22 | | Produce Association; Mission EDC manages the city's Center for |
---|
23 | 23 | | Education and Economic Development, a unique, 55,000-square-foot |
---|
24 | 24 | | business incubator and coworking space that has spawned numerous |
---|
25 | 25 | | local enterprises; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, A popular destination for "Winter Texans," Mission |
---|
27 | 27 | | boasts about 50 RV parks and welcomes an estimated 25,000 seasonal |
---|
28 | 28 | | residents during the coldest months of the year; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Recreational opportunities are abundant in Mission, |
---|
30 | 30 | | with such attractions as the National Butterfly Center, the World |
---|
31 | 31 | | Birding Center headquarters, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, |
---|
32 | 32 | | and the 10-mile Mission Hike and Bike Trail; since 2019, Mission has |
---|
33 | 33 | | been recognized as an All-America City; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Mission was immortalized in Larry McMurtry's novel |
---|
35 | 35 | | and television miniseries, Lonesome Dove, and notable residents |
---|
36 | 36 | | have included United States senator and treasury secretary Lloyd |
---|
37 | 37 | | Bentsen and United States congressman Kika de la Garza; moreover, |
---|
38 | 38 | | Mission was the childhood home of legendary Dallas Cowboys coach |

39 | 39 | | Tom Landry and a second home to Texas governor Allan Shivers, |
---|
40 | 40 | | Oscar-winning actress Sissy Spacek, and three-time presidential |

41 | 41 | | candidate William Jennings Bryan; and |

42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Mission Day at the Capitol provides an opportunity |

43 | 43 | | to honor the border city's heritage and its many charms, which are |

44 | 44 | | enjoyed by residents and vacationers alike; now, therefore, be it |

45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
46 | 46 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 29, 2023, as Mission Day at the |
---|
47 | 47 | | State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best |
---|
48 | 48 | | wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin. |
