5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Uvalde County are gathering in |

6 | 6 | | Austin on March 1, 2023, to celebrate Uvalde County Day at the State |

7 | 7 | | Capitol; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Permanent settlers began to arrive in the region in |
---|
9 | 9 | | the 1850s, and Uvalde County was established in 1856; a |
---|
10 | 10 | | rough-and-tumble frontier area during and after the Civil War, the |
---|
11 | 11 | | county became a ranching center in the late 1800s and was also |
---|
12 | 12 | | renowned for its honey, which took first prize at the Paris World's |
---|
13 | 13 | | Fair in 1900; today, the county's economy continues to be based on |
---|
14 | 14 | | agribusiness, including farming and the raising of livestock such |
---|
15 | 15 | | as cattle, sheep, and goats; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Four spring-fed rivers, the Nueces, Leona, Sabinal, |
---|
17 | 17 | | and Frio, have cut ruggedly beautiful canyons through the region's |
---|
18 | 18 | | rolling hills, and the county draws hunters from around the state |
---|
19 | 19 | | with its abundance of deer, quail, doves, and turkeys; |
---|
20 | 20 | | additionally, swimmers, campers, bird-watchers, and other outdoor |
---|
21 | 21 | | enthusiasts may enjoy the activities of the scenic Garner State |
---|
22 | 22 | | Park and Cooks Slough Sanctuary and Nature Park; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Founded more than 150 years ago, the city of Uvalde |

24 | 24 | | is the county seat and is home to a number of attractions; John |

25 | 25 | | Nance "Cactus Jack" Garner, the 32nd vice president of the United |
---|
26 | 26 | | States, lived and practiced law there; former Texas governor Dolph |
---|
27 | 27 | | Briscoe Jr. was born and raised in the city and returned to it |
---|
28 | 28 | | following the completion of his terms in office; the Briscoe Art and |
---|
29 | 29 | | Antique Collection displays works collected by Governor Briscoe and |
---|
30 | 30 | | his wife; in addition, the town hosts presentations by the Sahawe |
---|
31 | 31 | | Indian Dancers, who help preserve the Native American cultural |
---|
32 | 32 | | practices of the Southwest with their popular performances; and |

33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Other communities in the county include Knippa, |

34 | 34 | | Cline, Montell, Utopia, Concan, Reagan Wells, and Sabinal, which is |

35 | 35 | | a popular ranch center and retirement area; and |

36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of this notable county are working to |

37 | 37 | | preserve the best of their past even as they look forward to a |

38 | 38 | | bright and promising future, and it is fitting to honor them for |

39 | 39 | | their unique contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
---|
40 | 40 | | therefore, be it |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 1, 2023, as Uvalde County Day at |
