5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, University of Houston-Clear Lake Day is being |

6 | 6 | | celebrated at the State Capitol on March 7, 2023, and this occasion |
---|
7 | 7 | | provides a fitting opportunity to pay tribute to all those |
---|
8 | 8 | | associated with this notable institution; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, UHCL traces its beginning to 1971, when the 62nd |
---|
10 | 10 | | Texas Legislature authorized the creation of a University of |
---|
11 | 11 | | Houston campus to serve the Clear Lake area; in 1974, construction |
---|
12 | 12 | | began on the Bayou Building while more than 1,000 students and 60 |
---|
13 | 13 | | faculty members began holding classes at an off-site location; the |
---|
14 | 14 | | institution's educational mission has continued to expand through |
---|
15 | 15 | | the years; in 2006, UHCL began offering the joint master of |
---|
16 | 16 | | healthcare administration/master of business administration degree |
---|
17 | 17 | | program at the Texas Medical Center, and in 2010, the Pearland |
---|
18 | 18 | | Campus was opened; UHCL welcomed its first freshman and sophomore |
---|
19 | 19 | | students to campus in 2014; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, A four-year university, UHCL enrolls more than 8,500 |
---|
21 | 21 | | students annually and offers over 70 undergraduate and 50 graduate |
---|
22 | 22 | | degrees in its Colleges of Business, Education, Human Sciences and |
---|
23 | 23 | | Humanities, and Science and Engineering; since 2007, the university |
---|
24 | 24 | | has initiated doctoral programs in educational leadership, |
---|
25 | 25 | | curriculum and instruction, and health service psychology; the |
---|
26 | 26 | | school's 75,000 alumni include more than 400 CEOs and 10 |
---|
27 | 27 | | astronauts, as well as individuals who have distinguished |
---|
28 | 28 | | themselves in the fields of education, broadcasting, fiction |
---|
29 | 29 | | writing, and a vast range of other endeavors; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Reflecting its commitment to community service, |
---|
31 | 31 | | UHCL is home to many specialized centers and institutes, including |
---|
32 | 32 | | the Health and Human Performance Institute, the Environmental |
---|
33 | 33 | | Institute of Houston, the Diplomacy Institute, the Institute for |
---|
34 | 34 | | Human and Planetary Sustainability, and the Center for Autism and |
---|
35 | 35 | | Developmental Disabilities; the university has been cited five |
---|
36 | 36 | | times on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor |
---|
37 | 37 | | Roll for its exemplary civic engagement; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the University of |
---|
39 | 39 | | Houston-Clear Lake has fostered a diverse and inclusive campus |
---|
40 | 40 | | environment while providing students with a strong foundation for |
---|
41 | 41 | | success, and in so doing, it has become a cornerstone educational |
---|
42 | 42 | | institution in the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 7, 2023, as University of |
---|
45 | 45 | | Houston-Clear Lake Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm |
---|
46 | 46 | | welcome to the school's visiting delegation. |
