| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Lee County are gathering in |

| 6 | 6 | | Austin on February 28, 2023, to celebrate Lee County Day at the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In the years before it became part of Texas, the area |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | now known as Lee County was home to the Tonkawa people; European |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | exploration likely began in the area in the late 1600s, when Spanish |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | colonist Domingo Terán de los Ríos laid out what would later become |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | the Old San Antonio Road, a route that passed through present-day |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | central Lee County; settlement was sparse until after the Texas |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Revolution, when there was an increase in immigration from Europe |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | and the Southern states; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the Claypan area of southeast Central |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Texas, Lee County was created on April 14, 1874; the economy was |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | initially driven by wheat and corn production as well as cattle |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | ranching, but cotton became increasingly important as a crop after |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | 1900; in more recent decades, the oil and gas industry has also |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | grown in the area; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The seat of Lee County is Giddings, and other |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | notable communities include Lexington, Dime Box, Lincoln, Fedor, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Hills, Leo, Loebau, Manheim, Northrup, Serbin, Tanglewood, and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Knobbs Springs; local residents and visitors enjoy a number of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | annual events, including the Lee County Fair, the Dime Box Black |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Bridge Festival and Mini Marathon, the Merry Marketplace Arts and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Crafts Fair, and the Texas Word Wrangler Festival; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich and colorful history as they |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | work together to build a bright future, the citizens of Lee County |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | may take justifiable pride in the important role their unique |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | region continues to play in the story of the Lone Star State; now, |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 28, 2023, as Lee County Day |
