5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Texas AgriForestry Small Farmers and Ranchers |

6 | 6 | | organization has rendered exceptional support to historically |
---|
7 | 7 | | underserved agricultural producers; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In 2017, a group of socially disadvantaged farmers |
---|
9 | 9 | | and ranchers in Nacogdoches County formed TASFR as a nonprofit |
---|
10 | 10 | | dedicated to enhancing rural economies, conserving and managing |
---|
11 | 11 | | natural resources, preventing the further decline of family farms, |
---|
12 | 12 | | and improving the quality of life for minorities in rural areas; |
---|
13 | 13 | | under the leadership of executive director Igalious "Ike" Mills, |
---|
14 | 14 | | the organization serves communities across Texas, as well as |
---|
15 | 15 | | Oklahoma and Arkansas, through its outreach, technical assistance, |
---|
16 | 16 | | and research and development initiatives while promoting best |
---|
17 | 17 | | practices in renewable energy efforts and new technology in farming |
---|
18 | 18 | | and ranching operations; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, TASFR advocates for agricultural producers at the |
---|
20 | 20 | | local, state, and national level, and it sponsors an annual |
---|
21 | 21 | | Agriculture/Forestry Summit, where the U.S. Department of |
---|
22 | 22 | | Agriculture provides disadvantaged farmers and ranchers with |
---|
23 | 23 | | valuable information on a range of important topics; currently, |
---|
24 | 24 | | TASFR is collaborating with Prairie View A&M University, Stephen |
---|
25 | 25 | | F. Austin State University, Brigham Young University, and Duke |
---|
26 | 26 | | University in an effort to further support farmers and ranchers and |
---|
27 | 27 | | to increase program participation; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Providing a wide range of educational |
---|
29 | 29 | | opportunities, TASFR offers clients visits to farms and ranches, |
---|
30 | 30 | | surplus pine tree seedling planting assistance, agency |
---|
31 | 31 | | coordination for topography map and soil analysis, and youth and |
---|
32 | 32 | | community gardening programs; additionally, the organization gives |
---|
33 | 33 | | career and scholarship guidance and facilitates workshops on such |
---|
34 | 34 | | subjects as farm management, estate and financial planning, and |
---|
35 | 35 | | water quality; in carrying out its work, TASFR partners with a |
---|
36 | 36 | | number of agencies and organizations, including the Natural |
---|
37 | 37 | | Resources Conservation Service, the Farm Service Agency, and the |
---|
38 | 38 | | Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Policy Research |
---|
39 | 39 | | Center, among others; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, By helping historically underserved farmers and |
---|
41 | 41 | | ranchers to achieve success, TASFR has greatly benefited |
---|
42 | 42 | | communities throughout the Lone Star State and beyond, and all |
---|
43 | 43 | | those associated with the organization may indeed take pride in |
---|
44 | 44 | | their exceptional efforts; now, therefore, be it |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
46 | 46 | | Legislature hereby commend Texas AgriForestry Small Farmers and |
---|
47 | 47 | | Ranchers for its myriad contributions and extend to the |
---|
48 | 48 | | organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
50 | 50 | | prepared for TASFR as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
---|
