No. 342 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, A highly respected figure in professional football and beyond, Tony Dungy has excelled as a coach, an analyst, a bestselling author, and a civic leader who is dedicated to the community at large; and WHEREAS, Mr. Dungy's exceptional career in the National Football League spanned more than three decades as a player and coach; he was renowned for transforming the franchises he coached into contenders, and he had the distinction of taking teams to the playoffs in 10 consecutive seasons; the highlight of his tenure came in 2007, at the helm of the Indianapolis Colts, when he became the first African American head coach to win the Super Bowl; he retired following the 2008 season and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016; and WHEREAS, During his time as a player, Mr. Dungy was a record-setting quarterback at the University of Minnesota and then played for three years in the NFL, earning a Super Bowl championship ring in 1979 as a defensive back with the Pittsburgh Steelers; in 1980, he launched his coaching career as an assistant for his college alma mater, and he went on to serve as a member of the coaching staffs for Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Minnesota; as a head coach, he led Tampa Bay for six seasons before being hired by Indianapolis; and WHEREAS, Today, Mr. Dungy serves as a studio analyst for Football Night in America on NBC and is the author of such books as Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life and Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance; moreover, he has contributed his time and talents to countless worthy organizations and serves as national spokesman for All Pro Dad, the fatherhood program of Family First; and WHEREAS, Through his hard work, leadership, and commitment to helping others, Tony Dungy has set an inspiring example for his fellow citizens, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor him for his outstanding efforts; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby commend Tony Dungy for his professional accomplishments and civic engagement and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Coach Dungy as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
