55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, The Honorable Joseph D. Deshotel of Beaumont served
77 the citizens of District 22 with great dedication for more than two
88 decades until his retirement in January 2023, following his 12th
99 term; and
1010 WHEREAS, First elected in 1998, Representative Deshotel
1111 became a strong voice for the needs of his district and the entire
1212 Southeast Texas region; he developed great expertise in the
1313 legislative process, and his collegiality, pragmatism, and
1414 willingness to reach across the aisle made him an especially
1515 effective lawmaker; moreover, he maintained a good working
1616 relationship with leaders in the state's business sector; and
1717 WHEREAS, Representative Deshotel assisted multiple House
1818 speakers as a member of leadership teams; serving on numerous
1919 committees, he chaired the Economic Development, Business and
2020 Industry, and Land and Resource Management Committees, as well as
2121 the House Select Committee on Texas Ports, Innovation and
2222 Infrastructure; he co-chaired the Coastal Barrier System Committee
2323 and served on the Select Committee on Hurricane Ike Storm
2424 Devastation to the Texas Gulf; and
2525 WHEREAS, Born and raised in Beaumont, Representative
2626 Deshotel graduated from Lamar University and the Thurgood Marshall
2727 School of Law; he served Lamar University as vice president for
2828 administration and legal counsel, and he was appointed to its board
2929 of regents by Governor Mark White, who also named him to the Job
3030 Training Coordinating Council; deeply committed to civil rights,
3131 Representative Deshotel organized Lamar's first NAACP chapter; he
3232 was a member of the Beaumont City Council before running for state
3333 office; a respected member of the business community, he founded a
3434 general law practice; and
3535 WHEREAS, Over the course of his long career in public office,
3636 Representative Deshotel made a positive difference in the lives of
3737 countless Texans, and his contributions have earned him the lasting
3838 respect and appreciation of his colleagues and fellow citizens
3939 alike; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4141 Legislature hereby honor former State Representative Joseph D.
4242 Deshotel for his service and extend to him sincere best wishes for
4343 continued happiness in the next exciting chapter of his life; and,
4444 be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for Representative Deshotel as an expression of high
4747 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
