6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Honorable Joseph D. Deshotel of Beaumont served |

7 | 7 | | the citizens of District 22 with great dedication for more than two |
---|
8 | 8 | | decades until his retirement in January 2023, following his 12th |
---|
9 | 9 | | term; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, First elected in 1998, Representative Deshotel |
---|
11 | 11 | | became a strong voice for the needs of his district and the entire |
---|
12 | 12 | | Southeast Texas region; he developed great expertise in the |
---|
13 | 13 | | legislative process, and his collegiality, pragmatism, and |
---|
14 | 14 | | willingness to reach across the aisle made him an especially |
---|
15 | 15 | | effective lawmaker; moreover, he maintained a good working |
---|
16 | 16 | | relationship with leaders in the state's business sector; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Representative Deshotel assisted multiple House |
---|
18 | 18 | | speakers as a member of leadership teams; serving on numerous |
---|
19 | 19 | | committees, he chaired the Economic Development, Business and |
---|
20 | 20 | | Industry, and Land and Resource Management Committees, as well as |
---|
21 | 21 | | the House Select Committee on Texas Ports, Innovation and |
---|
22 | 22 | | Infrastructure; he co-chaired the Coastal Barrier System Committee |
---|
23 | 23 | | and served on the Select Committee on Hurricane Ike Storm |
---|
24 | 24 | | Devastation to the Texas Gulf; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Born and raised in Beaumont, Representative |
---|
26 | 26 | | Deshotel graduated from Lamar University and the Thurgood Marshall |
---|
27 | 27 | | School of Law; he served Lamar University as vice president for |
---|
28 | 28 | | administration and legal counsel, and he was appointed to its board |
---|
29 | 29 | | of regents by Governor Mark White, who also named him to the Job |
---|
30 | 30 | | Training Coordinating Council; deeply committed to civil rights, |
---|
31 | 31 | | Representative Deshotel organized Lamar's first NAACP chapter; he |
---|
32 | 32 | | was a member of the Beaumont City Council before running for state |
---|
33 | 33 | | office; a respected member of the business community, he founded a |
---|
34 | 34 | | general law practice; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of his long career in public office, |
---|
36 | 36 | | Representative Deshotel made a positive difference in the lives of |
---|
37 | 37 | | countless Texans, and his contributions have earned him the lasting |
---|
38 | 38 | | respect and appreciation of his colleagues and fellow citizens |
---|
39 | 39 | | alike; now, therefore, be it |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby honor former State Representative Joseph D. |
---|
42 | 42 | | Deshotel for his service and extend to him sincere best wishes for |
---|
43 | 43 | | continued happiness in the next exciting chapter of his life; and, |
