| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Athens are gathering in Austin on |

| 6 | 6 | | February 28, 2023, for Athens Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Athens was first incorporated in 1856, and through |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | the decades, this charming East Texas town has seen significant |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | growth; today, its diverse economic base includes industrial |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | manufacturing and other businesses in addition to farming and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | livestock ventures; education is a key element in the town's |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | productivity, with Trinity Valley Community College and the area's |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | other schools helping residents to prepare for the future; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The county seat of Henderson County, Athens is home |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | to a growing number of wineries, restaurants, and shops, and it has |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | been called the Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the World for the years |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | when "cowpeas" were a major crop for the local farming community; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Athens was also named the Original Home of the Hamburger by the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Texas Legislature in tribute to the role that local resident |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Fletcher Davis played in the creation of this American favorite; |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Visitors and residents alike enjoy such cultural |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | institutions as the East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society, the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Henderson County Performing Arts Center, the Cain Center, the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Henderson County Regional Fairpark Complex, and the Texas |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Freshwater Fisheries Center, where 300,000 gallons of aquarium |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | exhibits feature a wide variety of native Texas fish in natural |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | environments; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, This lovely town continues to be one of the Lone Star |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | State's great assets and an outstanding area in which to live, work, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and raise a family, and its citizens may indeed take pride in the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | place they call home; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 28, 2023, as Athens Day at |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin. |
