5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Floresville are gathering in |
---|
6 | 6 | | Austin to celebrate Floresville Day at the State Capitol on |
---|
7 | 7 | | March 1, 2023; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Floresville is situated 30 miles southeast of San |
---|
9 | 9 | | Antonio on land that was once occupied by Spanish settlers, who |
---|
10 | 10 | | established missions and ranches along the San Antonio River and |
---|
11 | 11 | | created supply routes leading to the Gulf Coast; formerly known as |
---|
12 | 12 | | Lodi, it was founded in 1867 and named after Don Francisco Flores de |
---|
13 | 13 | | Abrego, an immigrant from the Canary Islands who operated a ranch |
---|
14 | 14 | | outside of the town during the 18th century; in 1873, voters |
---|
15 | 15 | | approved the decision to make Floresville the Wilson County seat, |
---|
16 | 16 | | and it was incorporated in 1890; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the |
---|
18 | 18 | | city enjoyed a period of rapid growth with the arrival of the |
---|
19 | 19 | | San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway and the success of the local |
---|
20 | 20 | | cotton and livestock industries; around 1915, peanuts emerged as a |
---|
21 | 21 | | cash crop in the region, leading residents to dub Floresville the |
---|
22 | 22 | | "Peanut Capital of Texas"; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Today, Floresville serves as a market center for |
---|
24 | 24 | | peanut and grain farmers and cattle ranchers; with a population of |
---|
25 | 25 | | around 7,500 people, it provides residents with a more relaxed, |
---|
26 | 26 | | small-town lifestyle, while still being within commuting distance |
---|
27 | 27 | | of San Antonio; since 1938, the city has hosted the annual Peanut |
---|
28 | 28 | | Festival, which attracts more than 10,000 attendees and features |
---|
29 | 29 | | parades, pageants, and myriad other activities; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Floresville is home to hardworking and enterprising |
---|
31 | 31 | | citizens who are committed to building an even brighter future for |
---|
32 | 32 | | their community, and it is indeed fitting that their history and |
---|
33 | 33 | | achievements be recognized; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 1, 2023, as Floresville Day at |
---|
36 | 36 | | the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |
---|
37 | 37 | | best wishes for a meaningful and memorable visit to Austin; and, be |
