| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Starr County are gathering in |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Austin on March 7, 2023, to celebrate Starr County Day at the State |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Situated in South Texas along the Rio Grande, Starr |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | County was formed in 1848 and named for Dr. James Harper Starr of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the Republic of Texas; over the years, farming and ranching have |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | been integral to the area, and today, construction and extraction, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | health care, and retail trade further the region's prosperity; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Rio Grande City, the county seat, is located in the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | heart of Los Caminos del Rio Heritage Corridor, which contains |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | numerous architectural and historical treasures from the 18th and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | 19th centuries; Roma, the second largest city in the county, was |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | founded in 1765 as a Spanish colonial town and, with a number of |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | 19th century structures still standing, it is one of the best |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | remaining Spanish colonial townsites in the lower Rio Grande |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Valley; the city was designated a national historic district and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | was used in the filming of Viva Zapata, starring Marlon Brando; |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | other notable towns include Escobares and La Grulla; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike benefit from the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | recreational opportunities afforded by Las Palomas State Wildlife |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Management Area and Falcon International Reservoir as well as |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | year-round hunting; in addition, the county hosts a number of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | annual events, including the Starr County Fair and the Fourth of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | July Parade and Festival, held in Rio Grande City; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The people of Starr County take great pride in their |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | rich history as they work together to build an even brighter future, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and it is indeed appropriate to take this opportunity to honor them; |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | now, therefore, be it |

| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 7, 2023, as Starr County Day at |
