| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Wharton County are gathering in |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Austin on February 28, 2023, to celebrate Wharton County Day at the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Led by Stephen F. Austin under contract with the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Mexican government, prospective landowners first came to the plains |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | of the Colorado River in 1822; the Mexican Imperial Colonization |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Law of 1823 granted 177 acres to the heads of families for farming |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and 4,428 acres for raising cattle; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Wharton County was founded in April of 1846, and its |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | name commemorates two heroes of the Texas Revolution, brothers |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | William Harris Wharton and John Austin Wharton; the advent of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | railroads and irrigation brought increased settlement to the area, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | which remains a center of agricultural, educational, industrial, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | and medical services for a large region; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Today, nearly 42,000 people call the county home; |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | encompassing just over 1,000 square miles of primarily prairie and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | timberland, it is divided roughly in half by the Colorado River, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | which flows through the communities of Wharton and Glen Flora; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The county seat, Wharton is known for its small-town |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | way of life and its Czech, Danish, and Mexican heritage, as well as |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | for its proximity to both Houston and the Gulf Coast, its excellent |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | schools and championship football teams, and its popular festivals; |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | the area also attracts visitors seeking hunting and outdoor |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | recreation opportunities; the county's other largest towns include |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | El Campo, East Bernard, Boling, and Louise; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, With their resilience and strong sense of community, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | the people of Wharton County are working to preserve the best of |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | their past as they build an even brighter future, and it is indeed |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | fitting to honor them for their unique contributions to the story of |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 28, 2023, as Wharton County |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | delegation. |
