5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A delegation from Angelo State University is |

6 | 6 | | visiting Austin on March 21, 2023, in celebration of Angelo State |

7 | 7 | | University Day at the State Capitol; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Founded as San Angelo Junior College, ASU opened its |
---|
9 | 9 | | doors in 1928 with an initial enrollment of 112 students, and its |
---|
10 | 10 | | first graduating class consisted of six students; in the 1930s, the |
---|
11 | 11 | | school changed its name to San Angelo College, and it evolved into a |
---|
12 | 12 | | four-year, state-supported university during the 1960s; the school |
---|
13 | 13 | | adopted the name Angelo State College in 1965 and Angelo State |
---|
14 | 14 | | University in 1969; it was part of the Texas State University System |
---|
15 | 15 | | from 1963 to 2007, when it joined the Texas Tech University System; |
---|
16 | 16 | | and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, ASU serves more than 10,500 students and |
---|
18 | 18 | | employs some 900 faculty and staff members, who benefit from the |
---|
19 | 19 | | able leadership of President Ronnie D. Hawkins Jr.; it offers a wide |
---|
20 | 20 | | range of undergraduate and graduate programs with more than 100 |
---|
21 | 21 | | majors and concentrations, including an essential and rapidly |
---|
22 | 22 | | expanding commercial aviation program, across its six colleges, |
---|
23 | 23 | | which encompass health and human services, arts and humanities, |
---|
24 | 24 | | education, science and engineering, business, and graduate studies |
---|
25 | 25 | | and research; in addition, the school established the ASU |
---|
26 | 26 | | Distinguished Scholarship Program, which is funded by one of the |
---|
27 | 27 | | largest endowments at a U.S. regional university; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Among its many achievements, ASU has been ranked as |
---|
29 | 29 | | one of the nation's best colleges by The Princeton Review every year |
---|
30 | 30 | | since 2010; it has also been named a Hispanic-Serving Institution |
---|
31 | 31 | | by the U.S. Department of Education and a Military Friendly School |
---|
32 | 32 | | by G.I.Jobs magazine; ASU has more than 49,000 alumni around the |

33 | 33 | | globe; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, For almost nine and a half decades, Angelo State |
---|
35 | 35 | | University has played an important role in higher education in the |

36 | 36 | | Lone Star State, and its graduates continue to achieve success and |

37 | 37 | | make significant contributions in numerous fields of endeavor; now, |
---|

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 21, 2023, as Angelo State |
---|
41 | 41 | | University Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the |
