55 WHEREAS, According to estimates of the Texas Cancer Registry,
66 approximately 7,800 Texans between the ages of 15 and 39 will be
77 diagnosed with cancer in 2023; and
88 WHEREAS, Although cancer treatments such as chemotherapy,

1010 they carry the risk of directly or indirectly causing medically
1111 induced infertility; and
1212 WHEREAS, Infertility, more than merely a medical
1313 complication, is a life-altering experience for patients of
1414 reproductive age, and thus, every effort should be made to try to
1515 preserve a patient's fertility; and
1616 WHEREAS, After being diagnosed with cancer, patients often
1717 have only a short window of time to obtain the resources necessary
1818 to help protect fertility before beginning potentially sterilizing
1919 cancer treatment, making it critical that they are informed of and
2020 provided access to the options that are available; and
2121 WHEREAS, Ensuring that cancer patients have access to
2222 fertility preservation options before treatment has long been
2323 considered the standard of care by relevant national medical
2424 authorities, including the American Society for Reproductive
2525 Medicine, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the
2626 American Medical Association; and
2727 WHEREAS, The five-year survival rate for individuals
2828 diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 15 and 39 is over 85
2929 percent; these patients are expected to live long, full lives, and
3030 they deserve the same freedom of choice enjoyed by their peers; and
3131 WHEREAS, On February 28, 2023, a group of patients, family
3232 members, physicians, and patient advocates are meeting with
3333 legislators to discuss important issues related to fertility
3434 preservation for cancer patients, and these individuals are to be
3535 commended for bringing attention to a cause of tremendous
3636 importance to many Texans; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3838 Legislature hereby recognize February 28, 2023, as Texans
3939 Protecting Parenthood After Cancer Legislative Advocacy Day,
4040 extend a warm welcome to those who are visiting Austin to take part
