5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, According to estimates of the Texas Cancer Registry, |

6 | 6 | | approximately 7,800 Texans between the ages of 15 and 39 will be |
---|
7 | 7 | | diagnosed with cancer in 2023; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Although cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, |
---|
9 | 9 | | radiation, and surgery can effectively treat many types of cancer, |
---|
10 | 10 | | they carry the risk of directly or indirectly causing medically |
---|
11 | 11 | | induced infertility; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Infertility, more than merely a medical |
---|
13 | 13 | | complication, is a life-altering experience for patients of |
---|
14 | 14 | | reproductive age, and thus, every effort should be made to try to |
---|
15 | 15 | | preserve a patient's fertility; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, After being diagnosed with cancer, patients often |
---|
17 | 17 | | have only a short window of time to obtain the resources necessary |
---|
18 | 18 | | to help protect fertility before beginning potentially sterilizing |
---|
19 | 19 | | cancer treatment, making it critical that they are informed of and |
---|
20 | 20 | | provided access to the options that are available; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Ensuring that cancer patients have access to |
---|
22 | 22 | | fertility preservation options before treatment has long been |
---|
23 | 23 | | considered the standard of care by relevant national medical |
---|
24 | 24 | | authorities, including the American Society for Reproductive |
---|
25 | 25 | | Medicine, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the |
---|
26 | 26 | | American Medical Association; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The five-year survival rate for individuals |
---|
28 | 28 | | diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 15 and 39 is over 85 |
---|
29 | 29 | | percent; these patients are expected to live long, full lives, and |
---|
30 | 30 | | they deserve the same freedom of choice enjoyed by their peers; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, On February 28, 2023, a group of patients, family |
---|
32 | 32 | | members, physicians, and patient advocates are meeting with |
---|
33 | 33 | | legislators to discuss important issues related to fertility |
---|
34 | 34 | | preservation for cancer patients, and these individuals are to be |
---|
35 | 35 | | commended for bringing attention to a cause of tremendous |
---|
36 | 36 | | importance to many Texans; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 28, 2023, as Texans |
---|
39 | 39 | | Protecting Parenthood After Cancer Legislative Advocacy Day, |
---|
40 | 40 | | extend a warm welcome to those who are visiting Austin to take part |
---|
41 | 41 | | in this event, and urge all Texans to learn more about the issue of |
---|
42 | 42 | | fertility preservation for cancer patients. |
