5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Representatives of the Texas Ports Association are |

6 | 6 | | gathering in Austin for Texas Ports Day at the State Capitol on |

7 | 7 | | February 21, 2023; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, An essential element of the state's economy, which |
---|
9 | 9 | | is the ninth-largest economy in the world, Texas ports play an |
---|
10 | 10 | | integral role in the international supply chain; the system boasts |
---|
11 | 11 | | the largest container port on the Gulf Coast, the largest breakbulk |
---|
12 | 12 | | gateway in the U.S., the leading energy export gateway in the |
---|
13 | 13 | | nation, and the largest port in the country in total revenue |
---|
14 | 14 | | tonnage; ranked second in the U.S. in waterborne commerce, Texas |
---|
15 | 15 | | ports handle 616.2 million tons of foreign and domestic cargo, |
---|
16 | 16 | | generate $449.6 billion of total economic value for the state, and |
---|
17 | 17 | | impact more than 1.8 million jobs; a recent Global Trade article |
---|
18 | 18 | | lauded the state with the greatest cluster of power ports among the |
---|
19 | 19 | | top 20 list; moreover, three Texas ports are designated as |
---|
20 | 20 | | strategic military ports by the U.S. Department of Defense, |
---|
21 | 21 | | providing surface deployment and worldwide distribution for |
---|
22 | 22 | | military cargo; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Ports Association is an alliance of more |
---|
24 | 24 | | than 20 maritime ports along the Gulf Coast, and it represents a |
---|
25 | 25 | | number of import and export industries; the organization advocates |
---|
26 | 26 | | for infrastructure projects that will help supply chain |
---|
27 | 27 | | constraints, enhance port efficiency, improve the movement of |
---|
28 | 28 | | freight through intermodal systems, create new jobs, and attract |
---|
29 | 29 | | private investment; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, TPA greatly benefits from the leadership of its |
---|
31 | 31 | | executive director and CEO Glenna K. Bruun as well as its president |
---|
32 | 32 | | Phyllis Saathoff, vice president Victor Martinez, and |
---|
33 | 33 | | secretary/treasurer Nelda Olivo; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Texas ports contribute tremendously to the economic |
---|
35 | 35 | | vitality of the Lone Star State, and all those associated with the |
---|
36 | 36 | | Texas Ports Association are deserving of recognition for their |
---|
37 | 37 | | support and advocacy; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby recognize Texas Ports Day at the State Capitol |

40 | 40 | | on February 21, 2023, and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
