55 WHEREAS, Representatives of the Texas Ports Association are
66 gathering in Austin for Texas Ports Day at the State Capitol on
77 February 21, 2023; and
88 WHEREAS, An essential element of the state's economy, which
99 is the ninth-largest economy in the world, Texas ports play an
1010 integral role in the international supply chain; the system boasts
1111 the largest container port on the Gulf Coast, the largest breakbulk
1212 gateway in the U.S., the leading energy export gateway in the
1313 nation, and the largest port in the country in total revenue
1414 tonnage; ranked second in the U.S. in waterborne commerce, Texas
1515 ports handle 616.2 million tons of foreign and domestic cargo,
1616 generate $449.6 billion of total economic value for the state, and
1717 impact more than 1.8 million jobs; a recent Global Trade article
1818 lauded the state with the greatest cluster of power ports among the
1919 top 20 list; moreover, three Texas ports are designated as
2020 strategic military ports by the U.S. Department of Defense,
2121 providing surface deployment and worldwide distribution for
2222 military cargo; and
2323 WHEREAS, The Texas Ports Association is an alliance of more
2424 than 20 maritime ports along the Gulf Coast, and it represents a
2525 number of import and export industries; the organization advocates
2626 for infrastructure projects that will help supply chain
2727 constraints, enhance port efficiency, improve the movement of
2828 freight through intermodal systems, create new jobs, and attract
2929 private investment; and
3030 WHEREAS, TPA greatly benefits from the leadership of its
3131 executive director and CEO Glenna K. Bruun as well as its president
3232 Phyllis Saathoff, vice president Victor Martinez, and
3333 secretary/treasurer Nelda Olivo; and
3434 WHEREAS, Texas ports contribute tremendously to the economic
3535 vitality of the Lone Star State, and all those associated with the
3636 Texas Ports Association are deserving of recognition for their
3737 support and advocacy; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3939 Legislature hereby recognize Texas Ports Day at the State Capitol
4040 on February 21, 2023, and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
4141 members of the Texas Ports Association.
