44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A delegation from Erath County, including
66 representatives from the county, the City of Stephenville,
77 Stephenville ISD, the City of Dublin, Dublin ISD and Tarleton State
88 University, are gathering at the State Capitol on March 1, 2023, and
99 this occasion provides a welcome opportunity to recognize the
1010 county's contributions to the Lone Star State; and
1111 WHEREAS, Formed in 1856, Erath County is named for George
1212 B. Erath, an original surveyor of the area; cotton farming was an
1313 important early industry, and fruit orchards, dairy and poultry
1414 farms, and other agricultural ventures later became prominent; coal
1515 mining also provided jobs, and the Thurber Brick Company was
1616 established in 1918 to manufacture such materials as tile and
1717 paving bricks; and
1818 WHEREAS, The seat of Erath County, Stephenville is situated
1919 along the Bosque River; it honors John M. Stephen, who settled there
2020 in 1854 and donated land for the townsite; Stephenville has
2121 received the Main Street designation from the Texas Historical
2222 Commission, and the 1892 Erath County Courthouse designed by James
2323 Riely Gordon is renowned for its beauty; serving as a hub for the
2424 area's agricultural operations, Stephenville is also the site of
2525 medical facilities and retail businesses, with a range of
2626 manufacturers, including Fortune 500 companies, adding economic
2727 diversity to the community; and
2828 WHEREAS, The Stephenville Independent School District serves
2929 more than 3,600 students at three elementary schools, an
3030 intermediate school and junior high school, and Stephenville High
3131 School; the district has received an overall A rating from the Texas
3232 Education Agency and places a strong emphasis on the core values of
3333 initiative, integrity, and growth in preparing students for the
3434 challenges and opportunities of the future; and
3535 WHEREAS, the city of Dublin is located is southwestern Erath
3636 County; Dublin is home to Dublin Bottling Works, a bottling company
3737 formerly responsible for the famed "Dublin Dr. Pepper"; Dublin is
3838 the home of many famous Texan faces including renowned golfer Ben
3939 Hogan and legendary cowboy Gene Autry; Dublin is known as the
4040 official Irish Capitol of Texas, a designation it received in 2005;
4141 and
4242 WHEREAS, The Dublin Independent School System serves more
4343 than 1,000 students at Dublin Elementary School, Dublin
4444 Intermediate School, and Dublin High School; the district has
4545 received an overall A rating from the Texas Education Agency and
4646 boasts a near 95% four year graduation rate; and
4747 WHEREAS, The county is home to two higher education
4848 facilities, Ranger College and Tarleton State University, which is
4949 a four-year institution that was established in 1899; a member of
5050 The Texas A&M University System, TSU boasts an enrollment of more
5151 than 14,000 students and offers nearly 100 undergraduate and
5252 graduate degree plans; made up of seven academic colleges, the
5353 university also offers a doctorate in education and expanded online
5454 programs; and
5555 WHEREAS, Beloved for its rich Western heritage and rural
5656 friendliness, Erath County is one of the treasures of Texas, and its
5757 citizens may indeed take pride in the place they call home; now,
5858 therefore, be it
5959 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
6060 Legislature hereby recognize March 1, 2023, as Erath County Day at
6161 the State Capitol and commend the visitors from the county, the City
6262 of Stephenville, Stephenville ISD, and Tarleton State University
6363 for their community's contributions to the Lone Star State.
