H.R. No. 442 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Matthew Stafford distinguished himself as one of the top quarterbacks in professional football by leading the Los Angeles Rams to victory in the 2022 Super Bowl; and WHEREAS, Mr. Stafford first gained widespread acclaim at Highland Park High School in Dallas, where he paced the Scots to a perfect 2005 campaign that culminated with the UIL 4A Division 1 state championship; continuing his career at the University of Georgia, he garnered All-American and All-Southeastern Conference honors, and he was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the 2006 Chick-fil-A Bowl and the MVP of the 2009 Capital One Bowl; and WHEREAS, In 2009, Mr. Stafford was selected by the Detroit Lions as the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft; over the course of his 12 seasons in Detroit, he helped the Lions advance to the playoffs three times, and he became the team's all-time leader in such categories as completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns; and WHEREAS, Mr. Stafford was traded to the Rams in 2021 and quickly transformed the team into serious title contenders; after leading Los Angeles to the NFC West title, he was outstanding in postseason action, collecting his first playoff wins in decisions over the Arizona Cardinals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and producing six total touchdowns in those contests; he next engineered a dramatic triumph over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game, throwing for 337 yards and two scores in a 20-17 comeback win that set up a Super Bowl showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals; and WHEREAS, On February 13, 2022, the Rams battled for the championship at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles; with the game on the line and his team trailing 20-16 with less than two minutes remaining, Mr. Stafford demonstrated tremendous poise, orchestrating a 15-play drive that concluded with his pass to Cooper Kupp for the winning touchdown; overall, he completed 26 of 40 throws for 283 yards and 3 scores in the 23-20 triumph, delivering the Rams their first NFL title in 22 years; and WHEREAS, Matthew Stafford has inspired football fans across the Lone Star State and beyond, and he may indeed take great pride in his many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Matthew Stafford on leading the Los Angeles Rams to the 2022 Super Bowl championship and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Stafford as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
