55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, Family farms and ranches have long been essential to
77 the economy and culture of the Lone Star State, and the White Ranch
88 in Chambers County is indeed deserving of recognition for its
99 important role in the history of Southeast Texas; and
1010 WHEREAS, The White Ranch traces its origins back to 1828,
1111 when James Taylor White settled in present-day Chambers County and
1212 established the first Anglo-owned cattle ranch in Texas; the
1313 operation began with a stock of a dozen cattle, and over the years,
1414 the herd grew to some 10,000 head; a pioneer in the cattle-raising
1515 industry, Mr. White developed what would stand for many years as the
1616 industry's prime business model, trailing cattle from the ranch
1717 where they were raised to market; he drove his cattle along the
1818 Opelousas Trail to a more lucrative market in Louisiana; and
1919 WHEREAS, The ranch has been operated by the White family for
2020 many generations, and its original "Crossed W" brand is the oldest
2121 Texas cattle brand in continuous use; during the 1860s, James
2222 Taylor White II and his brother-in-law, James Jackson, built one of
2323 the first cattle fences at the ranch; today, James Taylor White's
2424 great-great-great-grandson Bill White and his wife, Katherine, are
2525 holding the reins, and they have continued the tradition of
2626 swimming their cattle across the Intracoastal Canal each fall to
2727 winter pasture on Bolivar Peninsula and then back in the spring; and
2828 WHEREAS, For nearly two centuries, the White Ranch has
2929 contributed to the rich heritage of Southeast Texas, and the White
3030 family may take great pride in all they have done to make the ranch
3131 one of the treasures of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3333 Legislature hereby recognize the White Ranch as the oldest
3434 Anglo-owned cattle ranch in continuous operation in Southeast Texas
3535 and extend to the members of the White family sincere best wishes
3636 for the future; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3838 prepared for the family as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3939 House of Representatives.
