55 WHEREAS, Hindu New Year is being observed on March 22, 2023;

77 WHEREAS, An occasion celebrated by Hindus in India and by
88 Hindus of other nationalities, Hindu New Year takes place during
99 the month of Chaitra, typically between March and April, according

1111 WHEREAS, Hindus from different regions of India observe the
1212 New Year at different times and call it by many names, among them
1313 Varsha Pratipada, Yugadi, Ugadi, Gudi Padwa, Baisakhi, Bihu,
1414 Puthandu, Vishu, Pana Sankranti, and Pohela Boishakh; the Hindu New
1515 Year is commonly associated with spring and is accompanied by
1616 customs that vary from region to region, which include decorating
1717 homes with vibrant flowers, eating special foods, and enjoying
1818 other regional festivities with unique colors, rituals, and music;

2020 WHEREAS, Our state is enriched immeasurably by the
2121 contributions of Hindu Americans, a large and multifaceted
2222 population with a lush tapestry of beliefs and practices, and Hindu
2323 New Year is an important and much-anticipated event for Hindus who
2424 call Texas home; now, therefore, be it
2525 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
2626 Legislature hereby recognize March 22, 2023, as Hindu New Year and
2727 extend to Hindus across the state of Texas sincere best wishes for a
2828 joyous and memorable celebration.
