5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The celebration of The University of Texas at |
---|
6 | 6 | | Arlington Day at the State Capitol on March 22, 2023, provides a |
---|
7 | 7 | | fitting occasion to recognize this notable institution; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1895 as Arlington College, the school |
---|
9 | 9 | | initially provided instruction to approximately 75 students from |
---|
10 | 10 | | the elementary grades through a level roughly equivalent to high |
---|
11 | 11 | | school; it was converted into Carlisle Military Academy in 1902 and |
---|
12 | 12 | | was subsequently known as Arlington Training School and then |
---|
13 | 13 | | Arlington Military Academy; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The institution transitioned into Grubbs Vocational |
---|
15 | 15 | | College, a branch of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of |
---|
16 | 16 | | Texas, in 1917; it maintained that affiliation with what is now |
---|
17 | 17 | | Texas A&M University after changing its name to North Texas |
---|
18 | 18 | | Agricultural College; by 1949, it was considered the largest |
---|
19 | 19 | | state-supported junior college in the Southwest, and it was renamed |
---|
20 | 20 | | Arlington State College; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In 1959, Arlington State became a comprehensive |
---|
22 | 22 | | four-year institution, and six years later, it joined The |
---|
23 | 23 | | University of Texas System; the state legislature conferred its |
---|
24 | 24 | | present-day name in 1967; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The university today is the second largest in the UT |
---|
26 | 26 | | System; its faculty is especially noted for specialized expertise |
---|
27 | 27 | | in national defense, information technologies, hypersonics, |
---|
28 | 28 | | healthcare informatics, energy, bioengineering, and |
---|
29 | 29 | | biotechnologies; in addition, it awards thousands of degrees each |
---|
30 | 30 | | year in critical workforce fields such as engineering and science, |
---|
31 | 31 | | education, and social work, and its nursing program has become the |
---|
32 | 32 | | largest producer of baccalaureate-prepared registered nurses in |
---|
33 | 33 | | Texas; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, An inclusive and impactful research university, it |
---|
35 | 35 | | was the state's fourth public university to achieve Texas Tier One |
---|
36 | 36 | | status in 2021, and it is one of only 21 universities nationwide to |
---|
37 | 37 | | be categorized as both an R1 institution by the Carnegie |
---|
38 | 38 | | Classification of Institutions of Higher Education and a |
---|
39 | 39 | | Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education; |
---|

41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of more than 125 years, The |
---|
42 | 42 | | University of Texas at Arlington has provided its students with a |
---|
43 | 43 | | strong foundation for achievement, and in so doing, it has played a |
---|
44 | 44 | | significant role in fostering economic development and enhancing |
---|
45 | 45 | | the quality of life in the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 22, 2023, as The University of |
---|
48 | 48 | | Texas at Arlington Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm |
---|
49 | 49 | | welcome to the visiting delegation. |
