5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |

6 | 6 | | passing of Eugene P. Toscano of San Antonio on February 23, 2023, at |
---|
7 | 7 | | the age of 89; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Cleofas and Anastacio Toscano, Gene |
---|
9 | 9 | | Toscano was born in San Antonio on June 8, 1933, and he grew up with |
---|
10 | 10 | | the companionship of four brothers, Lionel, Joseph, John, and |
---|
11 | 11 | | Henry; he graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1950 and |
---|
12 | 12 | | received a music scholarship to attend St. Mary's University, where |
---|
13 | 13 | | he earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1954; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, An accomplished trumpet player, Mr. Toscano played |
---|
15 | 15 | | salsa and tropical music in downtown San Antonio during his youth, |
---|
16 | 16 | | and he went on to participate in a nationwide tour with Rosita |
---|
17 | 17 | | Fernandez and Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez; answering his nation's call |
---|
18 | 18 | | to duty, he served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, and he played |
---|
19 | 19 | | trumpet in the Fifth Army Band during his time stationed in Germany; |
---|
20 | 20 | | to help support his family, he continued to play trumpet with a |
---|
21 | 21 | | number of orchestras while attending St. Mary's University School |
---|
22 | 22 | | of Law, and he obtained his law degree in 1961; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Toscano established the Gene Toscano, Inc., law |
---|
24 | 24 | | firm in San Antonio in 1965, and over the course of his career as an |
---|
25 | 25 | | attorney, he helped resolve thousands of legal disputes; he retired |
---|
26 | 26 | | in 2018, after 57 years of service in the legal profession; along |
---|
27 | 27 | | the way, he also worked as a real estate developer, political |
---|
28 | 28 | | commentator, rancher, bar owner, boxing promoter, and tire store |
---|
29 | 29 | | owner; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Toscano benefited from the |
---|
31 | 31 | | love and support of his wife, Esther, with whom he shared a |
---|
32 | 32 | | rewarding marriage that spanned nearly six decades; he took great |
---|
33 | 33 | | pride in their 5 children, Marisa, Gina, Andrew, Patrick, and |
---|
34 | 34 | | Monica, and he had the pleasure of welcoming into his family 11 |
---|
35 | 35 | | grandchildren; during his leisure time, he enjoyed horse racing, |
---|
36 | 36 | | following baseball, and cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, and he was |
---|
37 | 37 | | passionate about music and salsa dancing; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known Gene Toscano |
---|
39 | 39 | | will always remember the way he touched their lives with his warmth, |
---|
40 | 40 | | kindness, and delightful sense of humor, and they will forever hold |
---|
41 | 41 | | him close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Eugene P. Toscano |
---|
44 | 44 | | and extend heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones; and, be it further |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
46 | 46 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
47 | 47 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Gene |
---|
