5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Spark Change Project are celebrating |
---|
6 | 6 | | Spark Change Day on March 25, 2023; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Established in 2020, the Spark Change Project was |
---|
8 | 8 | | founded by Dr. Courtney Robinson, the executive director of the |
---|
9 | 9 | | Excellence and Advancement Foundation, and Julia Cuba Lewis, the |
---|
10 | 10 | | chief executive officer of Girls Empowerment Network; the |
---|
11 | 11 | | organization strives to empower young women of color to advocate |
---|
12 | 12 | | for positive social change; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The Spark Change Project recruits, hires, trains, |
---|
14 | 14 | | and mentors high school students to serve as peer facilitators; |
---|
15 | 15 | | through the program, participants help address important issues in |
---|
16 | 16 | | their communities and support causes they are passionate about, |
---|
17 | 17 | | including gender and racial justice; they also share their |
---|
18 | 18 | | knowledge and experience by helping to facilitate discussions at |
---|
19 | 19 | | town hall events and by providing written and spoken testimonies to |
---|
20 | 20 | | the Texas Legislature; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Participants in the Spark Change Project further |
---|
22 | 22 | | distinguish themselves through their involvement in Spark Change |
---|
23 | 23 | | Day, an advocacy event at the State Capitol that features a policy |
---|
24 | 24 | | agenda, discussions on key topics, and presentations and panels |
---|
25 | 25 | | from trailblazing women; attendees also engage in one-on-one |
---|
26 | 26 | | conversations with local leaders; during the summer, the |
---|
27 | 27 | | organization hosts Spark Change Camp, where peer facilitators help |
---|
28 | 28 | | train others to become activists in their communities; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The outstanding young Texans who participate in the |
---|
30 | 30 | | Spark Change Project have set an inspiring example of leadership |
---|
31 | 31 | | and political engagement, and they are indeed deserving of special |
---|
32 | 32 | | recognition for their efforts to make the Lone Star State an even |
---|
33 | 33 | | better place in which to live; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Spark Change Day and extend to all |
---|
36 | 36 | | those affiliated with the program sincere best wishes for continued |
---|
37 | 37 | | success in their important work; and, be it further |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

39 | 39 | | prepared for the Spark Change Project as an expression of high |
---|
40 | 40 | | regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
