5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Colorectal Cancer Prevention Awareness Month is |
---|
6 | 6 | | being observed in March 2023 to highlight the lifesaving importance |
---|
7 | 7 | | of screening and early detection for colorectal cancer; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of |
---|
9 | 9 | | cancer deaths overall; the American Cancer Society estimates that |
---|
10 | 10 | | more than 153,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal |
---|
11 | 11 | | cancer and over 52,000 Americans will lose their lives to the |
---|
12 | 12 | | disease in 2023; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The chance of developing colorectal cancer |
---|
14 | 14 | | increases with age, with nearly 90 percent of new cases diagnosed in |
---|
15 | 15 | | adults 50 years of age or older; people are also at higher risk of |
---|
16 | 16 | | getting the disease if they have an inherited disorder such as Lynch |
---|
17 | 17 | | syndrome, type 2 diabetes, a family history of colorectal cancer or |
---|
18 | 18 | | adenomatous polyps, or a personal history of certain conditions |
---|
19 | 19 | | such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Screening can prevent colon cancer by detecting |
---|
21 | 21 | | precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer; it can also help |
---|
22 | 22 | | gastroenterologists detect cancer early, when it is in a more |
---|
23 | 23 | | treatable stage; in addition to preventative screenings, people can |
---|
24 | 24 | | adopt certain lifestyle practices, which include maintaining a |
---|
25 | 25 | | healthy weight, being physically active, and avoiding alcohol and |
---|
26 | 26 | | smoking, that have been shown to help protect against this disease; |
---|
27 | 27 | | and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Among the organizations working to improve the care |
---|
29 | 29 | | of patients with colorectal cancer in this state is the Texas |
---|
30 | 30 | | Society for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy, a statewide |
---|
31 | 31 | | professional association that advocated for the passage of a 2021 |
---|
32 | 32 | | State Senate bill to provide coverage for colorectal cancer |
---|
33 | 33 | | screenings; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Colorectal Cancer Prevention Awareness Month serves |
---|
35 | 35 | | to educate Texans about the actions they can take to reduce the |
---|
36 | 36 | | risks associated with colorectal cancer, and those who are taking |
---|
37 | 37 | | part in this worthwhile endeavor are to be commended for their |
---|
38 | 38 | | efforts; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 2023 as Colorectal Cancer |
---|
41 | 41 | | Prevention Awareness Month and honor the Texas Society for |
---|
42 | 42 | | Gastroenterology and Endoscopy for helping to advance the goals of |
---|
43 | 43 | | this lifesaving campaign; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
45 | 45 | | prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the |
---|
46 | 46 | | Texas House of Representatives. |
