44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Colorectal Cancer Prevention Awareness Month is
66 being observed in March 2023 to highlight the lifesaving importance
77 of screening and early detection for colorectal cancer; and
88 WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of
99 cancer deaths overall; the American Cancer Society estimates that
1010 more than 153,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal
1111 cancer and over 52,000 Americans will lose their lives to the
1212 disease in 2023; and
1313 WHEREAS, The chance of developing colorectal cancer
1414 increases with age, with nearly 90 percent of new cases diagnosed in
1515 adults 50 years of age or older; people are also at higher risk of
1616 getting the disease if they have an inherited disorder such as Lynch
1717 syndrome, type 2 diabetes, a family history of colorectal cancer or
1818 adenomatous polyps, or a personal history of certain conditions
1919 such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease; and
2020 WHEREAS, Screening can prevent colon cancer by detecting
2121 precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer; it can also help
2222 gastroenterologists detect cancer early, when it is in a more
2323 treatable stage; in addition to preventative screenings, people can
2424 adopt certain lifestyle practices, which include maintaining a
2525 healthy weight, being physically active, and avoiding alcohol and
2626 smoking, that have been shown to help protect against this disease;
2727 and
2828 WHEREAS, Among the organizations working to improve the care
2929 of patients with colorectal cancer in this state is the Texas
3030 Society for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy, a statewide
3131 professional association that advocated for the passage of a 2021
3232 State Senate bill to provide coverage for colorectal cancer
3333 screenings; and
3434 WHEREAS, Colorectal Cancer Prevention Awareness Month serves
3535 to educate Texans about the actions they can take to reduce the
3636 risks associated with colorectal cancer, and those who are taking
3737 part in this worthwhile endeavor are to be commended for their
3838 efforts; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4040 Legislature hereby recognize March 2023 as Colorectal Cancer
4141 Prevention Awareness Month and honor the Texas Society for
4242 Gastroenterology and Endoscopy for helping to advance the goals of
4343 this lifesaving campaign; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4545 prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the
4646 Texas House of Representatives.
