| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Citizens from Denton County are gathering in Austin |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | on March 22, 2023, to celebrate Denton County Day at the State |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Located in North Texas and serving as the gateway to |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Denton County was created from the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Peters colony grant by the Texas Legislature in 1846 and named for |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | pioneer preacher, lawyer, and soldier John Bunyan Denton; the early |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | years of the county saw its emergence as an agricultural center, and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the arrival of the railroads in the 1880s ensured that the region's |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | wheat and cotton would find distribution across the country; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The county has experienced remarkable growth in |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | recent years, and with a population of about 980,000, Denton is one |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | of the fastest growing counties in the nation; it has drawn a number |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | of corporate residents as well, including Federal Express, Sally |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Beauty Holdings, Target, WinCo, Safran, and Peterbilt Motors; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The city of Denton, the county seat, is home to the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University, which were |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | founded as Texas Normal College and Girls' Industrial College in |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | 1890 and 1903, respectively; nearby Corinth hosts a campus of North |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Central Texas College, which offers technical and occupational |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | classes to residents throughout the county and beyond, and the area |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | is further served by 11 public school districts educating thousands |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | of young Texans at nearly 100 facilities; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Other attractions in the area include the wilderness |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | of the North Texas Greenbelt and the architecture of the Denton |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | County Courthouse-on-the-Square; moreover, the county is part of |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | the North Texas Horse Country, which is one of the largest regions |

| 32 | 32 | | for horse breeding and training in the southwestern United States, |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | and the county also boasts the second-largest sports facility in |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | the nation, the Texas Motor Speedway, which draws hundreds of |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | thousands of race fans each year; and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of this notable North Texas county are |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | working to preserve the best of their past even as they look forward |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | to a bright and promising future, and they are sure to figure |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | prominently in the story of the Lone Star State in the years ahead; |
|---|

| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 22, 2023, as Denton County Day |
