55 WHEREAS, The boys' basketball team of Lubbock Christian
66 School brought its season to a triumphant close by winning the 2023
77 Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools 3A state
88 championship; and
99 WHEREAS, During their regular schedule, the Eagles dropped
1010 just two games, and they claimed the District 1-3A title with a
1111 perfect record against their league rivals; in the playoffs, the
1212 team recorded blowout victories against Trinity School of Midland,
1313 Lucas Christian Academy, and Akiba Yavneh Academy of Dallas to
1414 advance to the state finale; and
1515 WHEREAS, Lubbock Christian took the floor against
1616 St. Francis Episcopal School of Houston on February 23 with the
1717 state crown on the line; in the second quarter, the Eagles outscored
1818 their opponent 17-10 to take a six-point lead into halftime, but
1919 repeated rallies by St. Francis in the second half kept the game
2020 close into the final minutes; making key defensive stops and
2121 demonstrating tremendous poise from the charity stripe, the Eagles
2222 sank several clutch free throws in the last minute to triumph by the
2323 final score of 55-51; the win secured the program's first state
2424 championship since 2013; and
2525 WHEREAS, Asher Fleming led the Eagles with 23 points in the
2626 title game, and Trew Farris and Riley Schroeder joined him on the 3A
2727 All-Tournament Team; Lubbock Christian also received valuable
2828 contributions throughout the season from the other members of the
2929 roster: Hays Hubik, Luke Lee, Welker Horn, Joseph Fernihough,
3030 Carson Farnsley, Cooper Carthel, Ben Hawley, Cade Larson, Josh
3131 Rogers, Major Tucker, Will Hawley, and Dai Dai Atkins; these
3232 talented student-athletes were ably guided by head coach Curt
3333 Softley and his staff; and
3434 WHEREAS, Winning a state championship is a daunting task that
3535 requires countless hours of hard work and an unwavering commitment
3636 to excellence, and the Lubbock Christian Eagles are a source of
3737 great pride to their school and their many supporters in the
3838 community; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4040 Legislature hereby congratulate the Lubbock Christian School boys'
4141 basketball team on winning the 2023 TAPPS 3A state championship and
4242 extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for
4343 continued success; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4545 prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4646 House of Representatives.
