5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |

6 | 6 | | passing of Henry Seu Heaum Gee on November 5, 2022, at the age of 98; |
---|

8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Bock Jew Gee and Suey Kim Mah, Henry Gee |
---|
9 | 9 | | was born in Kaiping County, Guangdong Province, China, on |
---|
10 | 10 | | February 20, 1924, and he grew up with three siblings, John, |
---|
11 | 11 | | George, and Shau; at the age of 16, he immigrated with his father to |
---|
12 | 12 | | the United States; he pursued his education in Houston and San |
---|
13 | 13 | | Francisco, and in 1942, he was recruited by the U.S. Merchant Marine |
---|
14 | 14 | | Academy; he subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and in 1945, he |
---|
15 | 15 | | was transferred to China to serve on the USS Estes; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Returning to the United States, Mr. Gee studied |
---|
17 | 17 | | civil engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, and he went |
---|
18 | 18 | | on to become the first Chinese engineer of the Texas Highway |
---|
19 | 19 | | Department; he next worked for Brown & Root, where he distinguished |
---|
20 | 20 | | himself by designing the roads for what would become the Johnson |
---|
21 | 21 | | Space Center campus in Clear Lake City; after retiring from a |
---|
22 | 22 | | 25-year career with the firm, he spent several years in sales with |
---|
23 | 23 | | Metropolitan Life Insurance Company; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Gee shared a rewarding marriage of nearly seven |
---|
25 | 25 | | decades with his wife, the former Wing Suet Leung, with whom he |
---|
26 | 26 | | helped establish the Institute of Chinese Culture in Houston in |
---|
27 | 27 | | 1970; a pillar of his community, he was president of the Chinese |
---|
28 | 28 | | Professional Club and the Association of Chinese Organizations, and |
---|
29 | 29 | | he was actively involved with the Gee Family Association; he also |
---|
30 | 30 | | played an instrumental role in raising funds for the construction |
---|
31 | 31 | | of a new school in the Gee family village in China; over the years, |
---|
32 | 32 | | he was honored by a number of civic organizations and government |
---|
33 | 33 | | agencies, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the |
---|
34 | 34 | | Overseas Committee of the Republic of China; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Mr. Gee took tremendous pride |
---|
36 | 36 | | in his three children, Juanna, Jennifer, and Julia, his four |
---|
37 | 37 | | grandchildren, Leslie, Laura, Lisa, and Christopher, and his |
---|
38 | 38 | | great-grandson, Theodore; his interests included photography and |
---|
39 | 39 | | travel, and he and his wife took numerous trips to the Far East, |
---|
40 | 40 | | Europe, and the Middle East; and |
---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, While the death of Henry Gee brings great sadness to |
---|
42 | 42 | | his loved ones, he leaves behind a legacy that will long be |
---|
43 | 43 | | treasured by all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Henry Seu Heaum Gee |
---|
46 | 46 | | and extend sincere condolences to his relatives and friends; and, |
---|
47 | 47 | | be it further |
---|
48 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

49 | 49 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
50 | 50 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Henry Gee. |
