44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the
66 passing of Henry Seu Heaum Gee on November 5, 2022, at the age of 98;
77 and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Bock Jew Gee and Suey Kim Mah, Henry Gee
99 was born in Kaiping County, Guangdong Province, China, on
1010 February 20, 1924, and he grew up with three siblings, John,
1111 George, and Shau; at the age of 16, he immigrated with his father to
1212 the United States; he pursued his education in Houston and San
1313 Francisco, and in 1942, he was recruited by the U.S. Merchant Marine
1414 Academy; he subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and in 1945, he
1515 was transferred to China to serve on the USS Estes; and
1616 WHEREAS, Returning to the United States, Mr. Gee studied
1717 civil engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, and he went
1818 on to become the first Chinese engineer of the Texas Highway
1919 Department; he next worked for Brown & Root, where he distinguished
2020 himself by designing the roads for what would become the Johnson
2121 Space Center campus in Clear Lake City; after retiring from a
2222 25-year career with the firm, he spent several years in sales with
2323 Metropolitan Life Insurance Company; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mr. Gee shared a rewarding marriage of nearly seven
2525 decades with his wife, the former Wing Suet Leung, with whom he
2626 helped establish the Institute of Chinese Culture in Houston in
2727 1970; a pillar of his community, he was president of the Chinese
2828 Professional Club and the Association of Chinese Organizations, and
2929 he was actively involved with the Gee Family Association; he also
3030 played an instrumental role in raising funds for the construction
3131 of a new school in the Gee family village in China; over the years,
3232 he was honored by a number of civic organizations and government
3333 agencies, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the
3434 Overseas Committee of the Republic of China; and
3535 WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Mr. Gee took tremendous pride
3636 in his three children, Juanna, Jennifer, and Julia, his four
3737 grandchildren, Leslie, Laura, Lisa, and Christopher, and his
3838 great-grandson, Theodore; his interests included photography and
3939 travel, and he and his wife took numerous trips to the Far East,
4040 Europe, and the Middle East; and
4141 WHEREAS, While the death of Henry Gee brings great sadness to
4242 his loved ones, he leaves behind a legacy that will long be
4343 treasured by all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4545 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Henry Seu Heaum Gee
4646 and extend sincere condolences to his relatives and friends; and,
4747 be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4949 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5050 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Henry Gee.
