55 WHEREAS, The boys' basketball team of Trinity Christian
66 School in Lubbock reached the pinnacle of success by winning the
77 2023 Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools 4A state
88 championship on February 25 at Robinson High School; and
99 WHEREAS, During the regular season, Trinity Christian lost
1010 just one game on its league schedule to claim the district title;
1111 following an opening round bye, the Runnin' Lions advanced through
1212 the playoffs with decisive victories over Dallas Christian School
1313 and Covenant Christian Academy to reach the state tournament for
1414 the third straight season; the team then dispatched McKinney
1515 Christian Academy 77-61 to punch its ticket to the state
1616 championship contest; and
1717 WHEREAS, Matching up against St. Thomas' Episcopal School,
1818 the Runnin' Lions found themselves in a thrilling battle for the
1919 state crown; down 18-17 in the second quarter, the team exploded for
2020 13 unanswered points, but St. Thomas' rallied and the score
2121 remained close early in the second half; the Runnin' Lions cranked
2222 up the defensive pressure in the last quarter and held their
2323 opponent scoreless until the final two minutes of the game; clutch
2424 free throw shooting at the end sealed the 69-61 triumph; finishing
2525 with an outstanding record of 29 wins and 7 losses, the team cut
2626 down the nets in celebration of the school's third state
2727 championship and first since 2017; and
2828 WHEREAS, Kieran Elliott registered a game-high 26 points
2929 while hauling down 12 rebounds and was joined on the all-tournament
3030 team by Marcus Ramon-Edwards and Jack Robinson; the trio, as well as
3131 district Newcomer of the Year Brady Watson, were selected to the
3232 All-District First Team; Dax Trout earned Second Team All-District
3333 honors, and Eli Reeves and Keller Partain garnered honorable
3434 mention accolades; the Runnin' Lions also received valuable
3535 contributions throughout the season from the other members of the
3636 roster: Jake Nicholson, Benjamin Bruce, Mason Roberson, and Sawyer
3737 Delgado; the team was ably guided by head coach Spencer Sutton and
3838 his staff; and
3939 WHEREAS, Winning a state championship represents the
4040 culmination of countless hours of hard work and an unwavering
4141 commitment to excellence, and the Trinity Christian Runnin' Lions
4242 are a source of great pride to their school and their many
4343 supporters in the Lubbock community; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4545 Legislature hereby congratulate the Trinity Christian School boys'
4646 basketball team on winning the 2023 TAPPS 4A state championship and
4747 extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for
4848 continued success; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5151 House of Representatives.
