5	5	WHEREAS, The boys' basketball team of Trinity Christian
6	6	School in Lubbock reached the pinnacle of success by winning the
7	7	2023 Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools 4A state
8	8	championship on February 25 at Robinson High School; and
9	9	WHEREAS, During the regular season, Trinity Christian lost
10	10	just one game on its league schedule to claim the district title;
11	11	following an opening round bye, the Runnin' Lions advanced through
12	12	the playoffs with decisive victories over Dallas Christian School
13	13	and Covenant Christian Academy to reach the state tournament for
14	14	the third straight season; the team then dispatched McKinney
15	15	Christian Academy 77-61 to punch its ticket to the state
16	16	championship contest; and
17	17	WHEREAS, Matching up against St. Thomas' Episcopal School,
18	18	the Runnin' Lions found themselves in a thrilling battle for the
19	19	state crown; down 18-17 in the second quarter, the team exploded for
20	20	13 unanswered points, but St. Thomas' rallied and the score
21	21	remained close early in the second half; the Runnin' Lions cranked
22	22	up the defensive pressure in the last quarter and held their
23	23	opponent scoreless until the final two minutes of the game; clutch
24	24	free throw shooting at the end sealed the 69-61 triumph; finishing
25	25	with an outstanding record of 29 wins and 7 losses, the team cut
26	26	down the nets in celebration of the school's third state
27	27	championship and first since 2017; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Kieran Elliott registered a game-high 26 points
29	29	while hauling down 12 rebounds and was joined on the all-tournament
30	30	team by Marcus Ramon-Edwards and Jack Robinson; the trio, as well as
31	31	district Newcomer of the Year Brady Watson, were selected to the
32	32	All-District First Team; Dax Trout earned Second Team All-District
33	33	honors, and Eli Reeves and Keller Partain garnered honorable
34	34	mention accolades; the Runnin' Lions also received valuable
35	35	contributions throughout the season from the other members of the
36	36	roster: Jake Nicholson, Benjamin Bruce, Mason Roberson, and Sawyer
37	37	Delgado; the team was ably guided by head coach Spencer Sutton and
38	38	his staff; and
39	39	WHEREAS, Winning a state championship represents the
40	40	culmination of countless hours of hard work and an unwavering
41	41	commitment to excellence, and the Trinity Christian Runnin' Lions
42	42	are a source of great pride to their school and their many
43	43	supporters in the Lubbock community; now, therefore, be it
44	44	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
45	45	Legislature hereby congratulate the Trinity Christian School boys'
46	46	basketball team on winning the 2023 TAPPS 4A state championship and
47	47	extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for
48	48	continued success; and, be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50	prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
51	51	House of Representatives.
