44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The family and friends of admired conservationist
66 and river advocate Sky Marshal Jones-Lewey suffered an immeasurable
77 loss with her death on May 31, 2022, at the age of 64; and
88 WHEREAS, Sky Jones-Lewey was born to Marjory Helen Scott
99 Jones and Elmo King Jones on May 26, 1958, in Uvalde; from an early
1010 age, she dedicated herself to the preservation of natural
1111 resources, particularly the Nueces River, which ran alongside her
1212 family's property, the Open V Ranch; and
1313 WHEREAS, For more than two decades, Ms. Jones-Lewey served as
1414 the resource protection and education director for the Nueces River
1515 Authority, an organization that works to preserve, protect, and
1616 develop surface water resources across some 15,000 square miles of
1717 South Texas; along the way, she led wide-reaching efforts to
1818 control invasive plants and protect water quality and spearheaded
1919 such award-winning initiatives as the Up2U Litter Prevention
2020 Campaign, the Watershed Stewardship Education Program, and the
2121 Riparian Landowners Network curriculum; and
2222 WHEREAS, Ms. Jones-Lewey's other worthy endeavors included
2323 championing legislation to prevent direct wastewater discharges
2424 into the remaining pristine streams of Texas, and she was
2525 instrumental in the passage of Senate Bill 155, which prohibits the
2626 use of motorized vehicles in navigable rivers; she was also
2727 involved in educating others about the need for river protection,
2828 and she published several editorials and helped edit a number of
2929 field guides on how to be a better steward of land and water
3030 resources; in 2022, she was honored as a River Hero by the River
3131 Network for her efforts to protect and restore local waterways; and
3232 WHEREAS, Sky Jones-Lewey lived a rich and purposeful life
3333 devoted to conserving the natural splendor of Texas, and her
3434 passion and commitment will forever inspire all those who knew and
3535 loved her; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3737 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Sky Marshal
3838 Jones-Lewey and extend sincere condolences to the members of her
3939 family: to Jefferson and Cherie Lewey; to Julie and Liia Lewey; to
4040 her grandchildren, Jack Mathis and Sonora Sky; to her many friends
4141 and colleagues; and to all others who mourn her passing; and, be it
4242 further
4343 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4444 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4545 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sky
4646 Jones-Lewey.
