5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The family and friends of admired conservationist |

6 | 6 | | and river advocate Sky Marshal Jones-Lewey suffered an immeasurable |

7 | 7 | | loss with her death on May 31, 2022, at the age of 64; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Sky Jones-Lewey was born to Marjory Helen Scott |
---|
9 | 9 | | Jones and Elmo King Jones on May 26, 1958, in Uvalde; from an early |
---|
10 | 10 | | age, she dedicated herself to the preservation of natural |
---|
11 | 11 | | resources, particularly the Nueces River, which ran alongside her |
---|
12 | 12 | | family's property, the Open V Ranch; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, For more than two decades, Ms. Jones-Lewey served as |
---|
14 | 14 | | the resource protection and education director for the Nueces River |
---|
15 | 15 | | Authority, an organization that works to preserve, protect, and |
---|
16 | 16 | | develop surface water resources across some 15,000 square miles of |
---|
17 | 17 | | South Texas; along the way, she led wide-reaching efforts to |
---|
18 | 18 | | control invasive plants and protect water quality and spearheaded |
---|
19 | 19 | | such award-winning initiatives as the Up2U Litter Prevention |
---|
20 | 20 | | Campaign, the Watershed Stewardship Education Program, and the |
---|
21 | 21 | | Riparian Landowners Network curriculum; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Jones-Lewey's other worthy endeavors included |
---|
23 | 23 | | championing legislation to prevent direct wastewater discharges |
---|
24 | 24 | | into the remaining pristine streams of Texas, and she was |
---|
25 | 25 | | instrumental in the passage of Senate Bill 155, which prohibits the |
---|
26 | 26 | | use of motorized vehicles in navigable rivers; she was also |
---|
27 | 27 | | involved in educating others about the need for river protection, |
---|
28 | 28 | | and she published several editorials and helped edit a number of |
---|
29 | 29 | | field guides on how to be a better steward of land and water |
---|
30 | 30 | | resources; in 2022, she was honored as a River Hero by the River |
---|
31 | 31 | | Network for her efforts to protect and restore local waterways; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Sky Jones-Lewey lived a rich and purposeful life |
---|
33 | 33 | | devoted to conserving the natural splendor of Texas, and her |
---|
34 | 34 | | passion and commitment will forever inspire all those who knew and |
---|
35 | 35 | | loved her; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Sky Marshal |
---|
38 | 38 | | Jones-Lewey and extend sincere condolences to the members of her |
---|
39 | 39 | | family: to Jefferson and Cherie Lewey; to Julie and Liia Lewey; to |

40 | 40 | | her grandchildren, Jack Mathis and Sonora Sky; to her many friends |

41 | 41 | | and colleagues; and to all others who mourn her passing; and, be it |
