8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Part of a prominent military family in Spain, |
---|
9 | 9 | | Bernardo Vicente Apolinar de Gálvez y Madrid was born in |
---|
10 | 10 | | Macharaviaya in 1746 and joined the Spanish military as a teenager, |
---|
11 | 11 | | beginning his career as a lieutenant in a war with Portugal; he made |
---|
12 | 12 | | his first trip to the Americas as part of an inspection tour of the |
---|
13 | 13 | | Viceroyalty of New Spain, and in 1769 he was commissioned to go to |
---|
14 | 14 | | the northern frontier of New Spain, where he received a promotion to |
---|
15 | 15 | | commandant of arms for Nueva Vizcaya and Sonora; after completing |
---|
16 | 16 | | various assignments in Europe, he returned to New Spain as a member |
---|
17 | 17 | | of the Louisiana Regiment in 1776; and |

18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Named the governor of Louisiana the following year, |

19 | 19 | | Mr. Gálvez made vital contributions to the Revolutionary War |

20 | 20 | | effort; he initially worked to ship gunpowder, muskets, uniforms, |

21 | 21 | | medicine, and other supplies to American colonial rebels, and |

22 | 22 | | following Spain's declaration of war on Great Britain, he conducted |
---|
23 | 23 | | a fierce campaign against the British along the Mississippi River |
---|
24 | 24 | | and Gulf Coast; he also negotiated with the Texas governor to supply |
---|
25 | 25 | | beef for the troops in the first cattle drives out of Texas; over |
---|
26 | 26 | | the next few years, he defeated the British in battles at Bayou |
---|
27 | 27 | | Manchac, Baton Rouge, Natchez, Mobile, and the Bahamas, and he |
---|
28 | 28 | | commanded a two-month siege on Fort George in Pensacola, which |
---|
29 | 29 | | ended with the British surrendering their West Florida capital; |
---|
30 | 30 | | after the war, he went on to serve as governor of Cuba and as viceroy |

32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of his achievements, Mr. Gálvez |

35 | 35 | | Galveston was also named in his honor, and the U.S. Congress |

37 | 37 | | hometown of Macharaviaya recognizes him with its annual Fourth of |

38 | 38 | | July celebration, which features a parade and a reenactment of his |
---|
39 | 39 | | capture of Fort George in Pensacola; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Bernardo de Gálvez played a pivotal role in the |
---|
41 | 41 | | American Revolutionary War, and his contributions earned the |
---|
42 | 42 | | lasting admiration and appreciation of all citizens; now, |

44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
