| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Ward County are gathering in |

| 6 | 6 | | Austin on March 9, 2023, to celebrate Ward County Day at the State |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The territory of Ward County was originally home to |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the Apache and Comanche Indians, and in 1881, the Texas and Pacific |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Railway built a line through the region, with stations at Barstow |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and Monahans; the county was created out of part of Tom Green County |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | in 1887 and named for Thomas "Peg Leg" Ward, a soldier in the Texas |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Revolution who lost his leg to a cannonball; a center for ranching |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | and farming in its early years, the area was transformed by the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | discovery of oil and gas in the 1920s; during World War II, it was |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the site of Pyote Army Air Field, and in 1957, the Monahans |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Sandhills State Historic Park was created in the county's northeast |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | corner; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Monahans, the Ward County seat, was founded in 1880 |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | by John Thomas Monahan, an employee of the Texas and Pacific who |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | found water at the site, and it was incorporated in 1928; situated |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | at the hub of the Permian Basin, the town boasts a welcoming |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | business environment facilitated by easy access to two railroads |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and two interstate highways; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Even as they celebrate their rich heritage, the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | hardworking people of Ward County are looking ahead to the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | opportunities of the future, and they may reflect with pride on |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | therefore, be it |

| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 9, 2023, as Ward County Day at |
