5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Since its founding in 2001, Beatrice Mayes Institute |

6 | 6 | | has made a positive difference in the lives of more than 20,000 |

7 | 7 | | students in Harris County; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, BMI is a tuition-free, state-funded charter school |
---|
9 | 9 | | that is focused on serving low-income and at-risk youth; it is |
---|
10 | 10 | | operated by the nonprofit Wonderland Educational Estate |
---|
11 | 11 | | Association, Inc., which is committed to providing a high-quality |
---|
12 | 12 | | education to all children in the community and operates both BMI and |
---|
13 | 13 | | its sister campus, Wonderland Private School; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Students at BMI benefit from a challenging and |
---|
15 | 15 | | engaging curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering, |
---|
16 | 16 | | the arts, and math; the institution employs a whole-child approach |
---|
17 | 17 | | that fosters academic excellence as well as social and emotional |
---|
18 | 18 | | development and civic responsibility; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, BMI strives to ensure that its students perform |
---|
20 | 20 | | academically in the 90th percentile or above, and the school |
---|
21 | 21 | | regularly earns distinction designations from the Texas Education |
---|
22 | 22 | | Agency in the areas of reading, science, social studies, and |
---|
23 | 23 | | post-secondary readiness as well as in closing-the-gaps |
---|
24 | 24 | | measurements; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and staff at Beatrice Mayes |
---|
26 | 26 | | Institute and the Wonderland Educational Estate Association are |
---|
27 | 27 | | building on a tradition of scholastic excellence that has spanned |
---|
28 | 28 | | more than 55 years, and all those who are involved with BMI may take |
---|
29 | 29 | | great pride in their efforts to provide the young people of |
---|
30 | 30 | | inner-city Houston and the Third Ward area with a strong foundation |
---|
31 | 31 | | for the future; now, therefore, be it |

32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 10, 2023, as Beatrice Mayes |

34 | 34 | | Institute Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the |

35 | 35 | | visiting delegation from BMI; and, be it further |
