55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, Food insecurity is a serious issue that impacts the
77 health and well-being of individuals across Texas; and
88 WHEREAS, Approximately 1.4 million households in the state
99 and nearly 4 million Texans are facing hunger; according to the
1010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 58 counties in Texas
1111 are considered food deserts, or areas where residents have limited
1212 access to affordable, healthy, and quality food; and
1313 WHEREAS, Studies show that food insecurity
1414 disproportionately affects people of color; Feeding America
1515 estimates that 21 percent of Black individuals, 23.5 percent of
1616 Native American individuals, and 15.8 percent of Latino individuals
1717 experienced food insecurity in 2021, compared to 11 percent of
1818 White individuals; and
1919 WHEREAS, More should be done to ensure that all Texans have
2020 access to nutritious foods, and every means of combating hunger
2121 should be explored; now, therefore, be it
2222 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
2323 Legislature hereby request the Speaker of the House to create an
2424 interim committee to study issues relating to food insecurity in
2525 Texas; and, be it further
2626 RESOLVED, That the committee submit a full report, including
2727 its findings and recommendations, to the House of Representatives
2828 of the 89th Texas Legislature before it convenes in January 2025.
