| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity are visiting the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | State Capitol on March 21, 2023, and this occasion provides a |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | fitting opportunity to honor the organization for its record of |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | leadership and service; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Omega Psi Phi was established by three students on |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the campus of Howard University in 1911; the Ninth District of Omega |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Psi Phi Fraternity was ratified 12 years later, expanding the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | fraternity to Texas, as well as to Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and California; today, the organization encompasses more than 750 |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | undergraduate and graduate chapters across the United States and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | around the world; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The fraternity encourages its members to strive for |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | academic excellence and to use their resources for the betterment |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | of society; working diligently toward the greater good, members |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | promote education, support voter registration, fight illiteracy, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, and participate in numerous |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | other mentoring and fund-raising activities; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In 1945, Omega Psi Phi launched a National Social |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Action Program to help address the needs of African Americans in the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | areas of health, housing, civil rights, and education; recent |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | initiatives include "Brother, You're on My Mind," a collaboration |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | with the National Institute on Minority Health and Health |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Disparities to start conversations about mental health; in 2022, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | the fraternity formed a partnership with the Alzheimer's |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Association to raise awareness of the disease in the Black |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | community and connect those affected and their families with |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | resources; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The men of Omega Psi Phi have distinguished |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | themselves through their countless good works, and they are to be |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | commended for their dedication to positive change and to the |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | principles that have guided this outstanding organization for more |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | than a century; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 21, 2023, as Omega Psi Phi Day at |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | delegation. |
