| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The ninth month of the Islamic calendar year, |

| 6 | 6 | | Ramadan is a time when Muslims reinforce their spiritual beliefs by |

| 7 | 7 | | fasting, worshipping, reading the Quran, practicing |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | self-discipline, and helping the less fortunate; in 2023, Ramadan |

| 9 | 9 | | is beginning on March 22 with the expected appearance of the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | crescent moon and lasts for the remainder of the lunar month; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | from sunrise until sunset in an effort to deepen their faith and to |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | better understand the plight of the poor and hungry; Muslims break |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | their daily fasts by sharing meals, known as iftars, with family and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | friends; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Muslims have been a part of the fabric of America |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | since the 1500s, when the first Muslims arrived as slaves with |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | colonial expeditions; today, Islam is one of the world's major |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | religions, with many followers across the United States and around |
|---|

| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, While focusing on their spiritual growth during |

| 22 | 22 | | Ramadan, Muslims affirm their commitment to working toward the |

| 23 | 23 | | collective good of society and the well-being of people from all |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | walks of life, and it is indeed fitting to acknowledge the |

| 25 | 25 | | significance of this special occasion to people of the Muslim faith |
