5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Sonya Kulkarni of Bellaire High School was selected |

6 | 6 | | to serve as one of two Texas delegates to the 61st annual United |

7 | 7 | | States Senate Youth Program, which took place in Washington, D.C., |
---|
8 | 8 | | from March 4 through 11, 2023; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Sponsored by The Hearst Foundation, the United |
---|
10 | 10 | | States Senate Youth Program enables a select group of U.S. high |
---|
11 | 11 | | school students to pursue their interest in a public service |
---|
12 | 12 | | career; every year, two student delegates are chosen from each |
---|
13 | 13 | | state, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense |
---|
14 | 14 | | Office of Dependents Schools to participate in a weeklong visit to |
---|
15 | 15 | | the nation's capital; the attendees visit the White House, both |
---|
16 | 16 | | chambers of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Pentagon, and they |
---|
17 | 17 | | attend briefings and addresses given by key government figures; |
---|
18 | 18 | | moreover, each delegate receives a $10,000 scholarship to help fund |
---|
19 | 19 | | their college studies; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, A senior at Bellaire High School, Ms. Kulkarni is |
---|
21 | 21 | | the first Houston Independent School District student to be |
---|
22 | 22 | | selected for the program in more than four decades; among her many |
---|
23 | 23 | | extracurricular activities, she is executive editor-in-chief of |
---|
24 | 24 | | her school's newspaper, the Three Penny Press, and she has written |
---|
25 | 25 | | for a number of publications, including Ms.magazine; in addition, |
---|
26 | 26 | | she is a member of the advisory team of the PBS NewsHour Student |
---|
27 | 27 | | Reporting Labs and a national youth ambassador for the American |
---|
28 | 28 | | Cancer Society; furthermore, she was one of 10 Houston ISD students |
---|
29 | 29 | | appointed by the superintendent to serve on the Legislative |
---|
30 | 30 | | Advisory Committee, which helps develop the district's federal and |
---|
31 | 31 | | state legislative priorities and provides feedback to the |
---|
32 | 32 | | Government Relations Department; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Talented students such as Sonya Kulkarni represent |
---|
34 | 34 | | the leaders of tomorrow, and the commitment to excellence that she |
---|
35 | 35 | | has demonstrated is certain to open the way to a bright and |
---|
36 | 36 | | promising future for this fine young Texan; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Sonya Kulkarni on her selection as |

39 | 39 | | a delegate to the 61st annual United States Senate Youth Program and |

40 | 40 | | extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in all her |
